By Don Welsh On Wednesday, Nov. 22 the Van Dyk Major Midgets played host to Markham. Bowmanville scored two unanswered goals in the first period. The first came off the stick of Darrel Goudy. His shot from the point beat the Markham goalie who- was very effectively screened on the play by Terry Riggers. Kevin Noble and Terry Riggers both drew assists in the play. The second goal of the period was set up when Chuck Welsh interrupted a Markham pass behind their net and passed, it to Brent Clemens in the siot. Brent received the pass and fired it behind the Markham> net- minder ah in one motion. Early in the second frame Bowmanville jumped into a 3 - 0 lead when Steve Braun forechecked a Markham defenceman and knocked the puck into the net right off the defenceman's stick. Markham got right back in the game by scoring twice in the next 21/, minutes. Just seven seconcis after Markham's second goal Terry Riggers broke in over the blue line and beat the Markham goalie with a wick- ed slap shot to the top corner. Kevin Noble drew an assist on this goal, The Van Dyk crew increased their lead to three when Carl Chambers did a fine job ofcontrolling the puck in the corner until he cou get it out to Jeff Sallows in front of the net who wasted no tinie, in putting it behind the netniind- er. If the players continue to hustle, pass the puck and stay away from foolish penalties they will certainly be a team to contend with throughout this season. On Friday, Nov. 24,the Van Dyk major midgets visited Stouffville where they had their hands full to earîi a tie. There was no scoring in the first period as the frustrated Realtors tried time and again to organîze their passing and skating game only to find that the short, narrow ice surface is not conducive to long passes or free wheeling skating. Early in the second period Stouffvil.le jumped into a two goal lead and it began to look as though the Realtors were going to be in for a bad night. Finally with 6:37 left in the Middle frame Terry Riggers took a pass from Neil Jones and using the Stouffville defencemen as a screen beat the goaltender with a shot to the top corner. Bowmanvjlle struck first in the third period when Darrell Goudy deflected a shot from Randy MacDonald to tie the game at 2 - 2. It was the Realtors turn to go ahead when, with 6.12 remaining in the game Terry Riggers connected for his second goal of the game on a pass from Rick Simpson. Stouffville stormed right back with two quick goals to once again take a one goal lead in the game. With just 1.36 remaining Terry Riggers took a pass from Neil Jones and shooting from a sharp angle beat the goalie on the short side. This was Terry's third goal of the game and gave Bowmanville a 4 - 4 tie. Although the Van Dyk crew played this game with only twelve players they certainly Put forth a well co-ordinated effort. The players skated well ad concentrated on their attempts to work a passing game. As is usual fromf teams from Bowmanville it took a while to become accustomed to the confines of the much mail ice surface but the Realtors persisted and put together an excellent showing in the second haîf of the game. One other noteworthy aspect of the game was that the boys [id not become frustrated and take a lot of unnecessary penalties. They had only 3 penalties in the entire game. bhis makes twice this week te Van Dyk team has shown rat when they stick to hockey nd stay out of the penalty boxý 'ey are a team to be reckoned xith. 1
