BHS Students Study Home Planning This high schooi class is getting some on-the-spot instruction in the art of building and designing a house. Members of the Bowmanville High School home planning and design class took time to tour a new home recently built on Liberty St. near the High School. The tour is part of a course for grade 11, 12 and, 13 students who will design their own homes and make models later in the year. Here, Mr. Patten, the in- structor, points out some of the key features of the house the students visited last week. Bowmanville High 'School's giant coloring books are selling like hotcakes. Secretariai student Bonnie Lane, teacher Margaret Campos and student Theresa Tucknott are just three of the people involved in marketing the book. Fund-raising can becomre a problem with so many charit- ies, community and schiool groups vying for- the pubàlic dollar, but a group of secretar- ial students at Bowmanville High School have found an answer to the problem.l Giant coloring books with the school name on the cover and filled with comical Christ- mas cartoon characters !are helping students raise money for a work week in Toron;o. At $3 each, the books are selling like hotcakes, admits marketing instructor Margar- et Campos.,i The coloring books haive proved to be such a poptuar novelty item among studEnts and local residents that the original order of 500 has been tripled. i Printed by an advertisýng firm in Windsor, Ontario, 'the books make an unique stock- ing stuffer. Unfortunately the firmn bas been swamped with orders for its coloring books and cannot print them after December 1.1 1 I the past, secretarial students have raised money for work week through car washes and chocolate bar sales, but nothing bas been quite as successful as the giant coloring books. The idea for a giant coloring book didn't originate at Bow- manvîlle High School, but a similar coloring book to the one the students are selling caught the eye of one of Mrs. Campos' marketing students, who brought the idea back to, class. Secretarial students have been raising money for work week for six years. That's as long as the week has been a part of the course, says Mrs. Campos. The cost of the Toronto adventure is $80 per student. The $80 covers the transport- ation, meals and accommoda- tion at a University of Toronto residence for the student. Besides providing inval- uable working expenience for each student, the week gives them a chance»t find out what it's like living away from home and sharnu a room with someone who is not a member of the family. Each 1firmn that takes a Bowmanville student is care- fully screened first by the school. This ensures that the student is placed in a good Nothing to Say "Hey Hugh, what can I write about?'1" "I don't know, just don't bug me. I'm busy." "That can wait, this is important. I have to turn something in tomorrow.," "Wouid you go away. If I don't dlean this place up - no party tomorrow night. On second thought don't go away. Pick up the other end of this and help me carry it ii.to my room. " "No way, I'm allergic to physical labour. " "Move it dummy, or ya don't get none of the beer. " "Okay aiready, my allergy is not terminal- The Canadian Cancer Society Helps Those Who Are 11,1 with Cancer and In Need of Assistance The Bowmanville and District Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society is urgently in need of drivers ta transport patients ta treatment centers. Teachers visit each student on the job to see that they are doîng meaning- fui work that will help them in their careers. Toronto may seem like quite a distance to send students on a work week, but Mrs. Campos says that the demand for student placement is so high that business firms in the area cannot accomnmodate all the students from area high schools. icky poo-which way?" Seniors Despite Mr. Jacobs' confidence in his Junior boys basketbail team Mr. Todd and his seniors defeated them with a score of 69 to 34. The game took place on Thursday, November 30, with Mr, Morris and Mr. N. Johnson trying their hand at refereeing. Although vanquished by their swift opponents, the Juniors made an admirable showing. Wade Preston of the senior team played well considering his oc- casional fail on his face. Grady Robson dazzled the crowd as he and -the bail guided across the floor. In the Junior team enthusiasm was displayed by their yawns and full lengthed arm stretches. Todd Hooper played well making the bal soar into the seniors basket more than just a few times. Brook Cole was very energetic and played a great game. Both teams played with pien'ty of effort. The seniors started the game piaying with their full potential and preventing the Juniors from scoring, then (much to the seniors suprise) their inex- perienced opponents stole the lead from them.* Mr. Jacobs sat on the bench with crossed fingers while Mr. Todd was sitting on the bench across from him grit- ting his teeth. The onlookers remained neutral. The game came to life again with the seniors scoring against Ope rates Light at Marathon Dance Mr. Jacobs team. The Juniors would score. The seniors, would score. The game was close until the end of the first half. Much to Mr. Todd's pleasure and Mr. Jacob's bewilderment the seniors scored, and scored and scored. The crowd was breathless at the fast pace in which the game was played. One minute to go and both teams are over- worked and exhausted.
