Girl, Guides and Brownies Thrill Mail Shoppers, with Christmas Carols On Friday evening, Christmas shoppers at Bowmanville Mail had an unexpected treat in store for them when dozens of Bowmanville Brownies and Girl Guides entertained them with Christmas carols under direction of their leaders. Here, Emmanuel! Two missionaries, Bosshart and Hayman, of the China Inland one section of the large group is in action singing one of the familiar carols. We were especially delighted to find them using The Statesman song sheets. Mission, were taken captive by a gang of Chinese bandits. They were held, under close> confinement with no fire for warmth. Instruc- tions were given that they were niot to speak to one another. It was Christmas day. The hours dragged by. Their bodies became numbed by the cold and their minds groped about in despair. The future looked dark. Suddenly Bosshart recalled a word of scrip-, ture. The single word, Emmanuel, "God w'ith us." Hope invaded his being. He must com- municate this to his fellow hostage but how without speaking? Taking some pieces of straw lying on the floor, he laid them out, spelling the word Em- manuel. His friend looked at hîm and a flash of comprehension passed between them. "God is with us! " 1 In today's world there are many people con-, fronted with the spec- tres of poverty, loneliness, alienation, hostility and spiritual bankruptcy., Then Christmas comes once again. We are reminded that we are not alone. Emmanuel, God is with us. The Psalmist of the Old Testament breaks forth in exultation declaring God's mercy reaches to the heavens. This season of the year we are reminded that His mercy also reaches to the earth, to us, and to ahl people, answering the deepest needs of our being. "We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; 0 corne to us, abide with FOR RENT Bowmanville - 2 bedroom home, $240. monthly, pay own utiities, avail- able imnmediately. Caîl 623-7661.
