On Sunday evening, a few Lionette members visited re- sidents of South Haven Nurs- ing Home and a few senior citizens who are shut-ins. Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alec'Martin were Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Allin, son Neil and grandchildren Sean and Ailan McKenzie, Orono, Tom Martin, Bowman- ville and Mr. Bill Morley, Newcastle. On Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Garrod Jr., held an engagement dinner and dance in honor of their daughter Sandra, whose en- gagement was announced to Mr. Tom Schmahl. About seventy-five friends and rela- tives were present to honor the happy couple. Mrs. Jill Christie, Mr. Ian Barron, and Mrs. Raye Fried- lander, Toronto were weekend visitors with the Garrod's and attended the party. Mrs. Jill Christie, Toronto, moved into her new residence on Tuesday. This was former- ly the home of the late Mr. Britton and Mrs. Harve Brit- ton who resides now in the Hendry Apt., Bowmanville. Mrs. Wilda Johnson and Gary and Miss Sandra Kelsey visited Mrs. Glenda Rumbles and new baby Krista at Peterborough Hospital on Sun- day. On Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell attended the PUC Christmas Party at Centennial Hall, Bowman- ville, when a presentation was made to retiring Bert Staple- ton of Bowmanville PUC. The Newcastle PUC staff and commission enjoyed Sat- urday evening dinner at King's Garden, Bowmanville, and returned to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Denton Massie for a social time at Christmas. Wednesday luncheon guests of Mrs. Kathleen Kimball were sister-in-law, Mrs. Lena Graham, Mrs. Leone Lane and Mrs. Lena Clysdale, New- tonville. Suriday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Peel, Michael and Danielle, were her parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kimball, Port Granby and Mrs. Kathleen Kimball. At the home of Mrs. Carolyn Garrod recently, a bridal shower was held in honor of Miss Linda Fournier, Oshawa, bride-to-be of Mr. Robin Walton. Mr and Mrs. John Cunning- ham and Philip entertained family and friends to a pre-Christmas dinner and tree-trimming party. Mr. Philip Gilmer was a Tuesday visitor with Mrs. Kathleen Kimball. The Newcastle Lumber Company Christmas party was held at the Oasis on Saturday night. Present were owner Mr. Robert Reusse and his wife, Toronto, Manager Mr. Doug McVittie and Mrs. McVittie, Mr. and Mrs. Wal- lace Boughen, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Alldread, Mr. and Mrs. James Stephenson, Mr. David Thrower, Mr. and Mrs. Alan Pears, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Chard and Mr. and Mrs. Craig Whitney. In recognition of his 25 years' service Mr. Wallace Boughen was presented with a Telephone 987-4201 j table saw, and a plaque from Mr. Reusse. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Crago visited on Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Coulter, Kevin and Keith, Campbellville, and with her sister, Mrs. D. Coulter, Downsview. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bennett, Omemee, were Saturday evening visitors with her mother Mrs. Nellie Spencer. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Reid Bowmanville were Sunday callers at Mrs. Dorothy Har- mer's. Mrs. Muriel Neal, Orono spent a few days last week with Mr. and Mrs. William Lake, Sr. Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. William Lake Sr. were Mr. and Mrs. Don Lake and family, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Lake and family, Mr. and Mrs. Morley Lake, and Mr. and Mrs. William Lake, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Ball, Kirby were Friday afternoon visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Robin Alldred. The Bowmanville Area Nur- ses enjoyed a Christmas party last Monday night. After dinner at a Bowmanville restaurant, the 25 ladies had a social time at Miss Velma Gay's. About twenty-four members of the Newtonville W.L. enjoy- ed their Christmas meeting at the home of Mrs. Bessie Stephenson. Mr. and Mrs. R. Geach, Kendal, and Mrs. Bruce Alldred were Sunday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robin Alldred. Mr. Norman Coburn, Win- nipeg, spent last week with his sister, Mrs. Gladys Pacey and the Hooey family. Mr. Edward Coburn and daughter Gail, Warkworth were Saturday evening guests. Mr. Ross Embley continues to be a patient in Kingston General Hospital. Birthday greetings to Scott Foster. Mr. and Mrs. Robin Alldred visited on Saturday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Henderson, Newtonville. Mrs. Reta Embley visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Tracy Embley, Bowmanville. Weekend visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hagerman were her sister and brother-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Mclntosh, Stirling. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hagerman and Pamela, Oshawa were Sunday visitors with his parents. Mr. Bill Morley, Mrs. Flor- ence Ferguson, Mrs. Rachel Dennis, Mrs. May Burley and Mr. Arthur Clarke attended the card party in Kendal on Friday night. Mrs. Rachel Dennis was the lucky 50-50 draw winner. Patients in hospital include Miss Flossie Graham, Mr. Fred Wind, Mr. Eric Clarke. Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Nicholls, Port Britain, visited recently with Mr. and Mrs. S.J. Lancaster. The Newcastle Lions held their regular meeting last Wednesday. Senior Citizens' Christmas Party On Thursday evening, Dec. 14, about sixty Senior Citizens enjoyed turkey dinner at the King's Garden Restaurant, Bowmanville. Following din- ner they returned to New- castle Community Hall for an evening's entertainment. To the piano accompaniment of Mr. Les. Collacutt, Mr. Don Fletcher played the violin and a lady friend tap-danced. Community singing was en- joyed. Rev. Thomas Smith led in carol singing. Miss Pearl Leach gave a reading about Christmas Shopping. Mr. Van Hamburg, Orono played the guitar and sang. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, Howard Cryder- man and Pearl Leach, played their parts well. After an exchange of gifts, lunch was served. This was a very enjoyable evening. Anglican Church News Mr. and Mrs. Fred Yates, Mr. Len Palin, Mr. Wayne Linton, and Rev. Allan Hal- denby attended the Anglican Deanery Council Meeting in St. John's Church, Port Hope, on Tuesday, December 12. Canon Malcolm Evans of Grace Church-on-the-Hill, Toronto spoke on the Steward- ship Procedures of the Dio- cese. The Rev. William Rain- ey of St. John's, Port Hope, announced that his term as Regional Dean of Durham Northumberland had come to a close and he turned the office over to Rev. A. Halden- by who had been appointed by Bishop Garnsworthy. Rev. Haldenby thanked him for his distinguished service to the Deanery and asked for con- tinued co-operation. Election will be held at the next meeting. Some pupils of the Newcas- tle Public School came to St. George's at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17. Under the direction of Mrs. Gloria Gray and Mrs. Vondracek, the three carols rendered by the pupils were much appreciated by the congregation. Two fine hymn boards, gift of Pat and Betty Blaker, were dedicated at the service in memory of Leo and Ethel Blaker and William and An- nabella Kempston. The service emphasized the messenger of Jesus Christ, John the Baptist. We are also messengers of our Lord. The Preacher asked, Will we be messengers at other times, as at Christmas? Next Sunday there will be Readings and Carols at 11:15 a.m. Christmas Eve Service at 11:30 p.m. and 10 a.m. Service Christmas Day. Members of St. George's Anglican Church Women had their Christmas meeting at the home of Nell Yates on Wednesday. It was a happy meeting except for the fact that their President Jenny Park was ill and not able to attend. Mrs. Park and her family have recently moved to a home near Cobourg and she is giving up her office. Mrs. Hilda Call, vice-president was unable to attend because of illness and Mrs. Yates con- ducted the meeting. St. George's Young People went roller skating Sunday afternoon in Toronto and then returned for Pot Luck dinner and meeting at the Hall. No further meetings will be held until Jan. 7. Bible Studies will be held at 10 a.m. on Sundays. United Church Women The General Meeting of the UCW was held in the Board Room on Monday evening, Dec. 11. President Eileen Allin welcomed the ladies and read a fitting Christmas poem. Since this was the last meeting of the year, Treasurer Jean Holmes gave a detailed report of the finances. Several other reports were given including the nominations for next year. The remainder of the evening was presided over by the incoming President Kathleen Powell. A very meaningful Christmas worship was con- ducted by Erla Jose, Pearl Noble, Vicki Lesnick and Marjorie Hagerman. Mrs. Marie Podwell played the piano accompaniment for the singing of carols. Mrs. Joan Gosch sang a solo 'O Holy Night'. Lunch was served by Many Meet Santa in Newcastle Santa was the guest of honor at a party held in Newcastle Village Saturday afternoon. Taking time out from a busy schedule at the North Pole, Santa han- ded out about 200 bags of candy and said hello to young friends who gathered to meet him in the gymnasium of the Newcastle Public School.
