8 T'he Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 14, 1979 Section Two Red Cross Honors Blood Donor Veterans at Wednesday Clinic Orono-Lockhart Sehool News The Physical Education and Environmental Studies pro- grammes at the Orono- Lockhart Sehool have recently included cross country skiing and skating outings. Grade Six pupils of Orono-Lockhart have had several sessions of cross- country skiing at the Western Outdoor Education Centre. Audrey Wilson, Environment- al Studies consultant, and her staff assist teachers in the activity. Children are taught skiing skills, proper waxing' technqe and the history of cross-onry skiing. School on Friday, February 2 and Saturday, February 3. Teams from the twinned sehool won several games, but they were eliminated before reachîng the finals. Lockhart boys obtained silver medalions and a runner-up plaque for their second place finish in the tournament. Mr. Witheridge and Mrs. Deremo coached the Orono players, while Mr. Eames and Mr. flupuis shared responsibility for the Lockhart teams. Constable Don Anderson of the Durham Regional Police, recently presented a film and discussion of winter safety to pupils at Orono and Lockhart. The film pointed out the dangers of snow tunnels, frozen lakes and rivers, toboganning near roads and other winter hazards. Constable Don returned to Mrs. Deremo's class at Orono to make a presentation about fingerprinting. This was part of a Grade Four study which had arisen from a reading assignment. A general meeting of the Lockhart Community was held at Lockhart school on Wednesday, January 31. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the community of progress in the planning of the creative playground. Offers of help and materials were also received during the evening. Mr. Dave Gibson, project manager assisted Mr. Dupuis, Vice-principal, in the presentaton of plans. Informal dialogue, questions and answers, and further planning completed the program. A small, but enthusiastic group of parents and other com- munity residents, attended this initial planning session. The playground project is scheduled for the latter part of May .1979, at the Lockhart School. The, television videotape machine, which was purchas- ed through partial funding by the Orono and Lockhart parents' groups, has seen active use. Luckhart Grade Six pupils have followed the vîsual novel "Tom Gratten's War". Primary pupils have seen the "Readalong" series and other levels have viewed the "All About Me" series which is part of Human Growth, and Development Cur- riculumh. These and other programs are broadcast through the Ontario Education facilities, and have provided a useful teaching aid within class programmes for several years.
