14 The Canadian Statesmian, Bowmanville, Marcb 7, 1979 Til nk Sco res Hat Trick As Toros Boat Oshawa by Bill Paterson February 25, 1979 - Child- ren's Arena, Oshawa - The Constitution Minor Midgets met the Bill Clarke Plumbing Blackhawks in an exhibition game and came away 6 to 1 victors. With Terry Bradey playing a superb game in goal, ten skaters plus a back up goal tender, Craig German took on the Little N.H.L. Blackhawks who managed to ice two complete lines. As is the case in situations like this every- body worked their tails off. Oshawa struck for the first and their only goal at 3:05 of the first period. Bowmanville got on the board at .30 of the second period when Kevin Tink set Up Dana Peebles in the slot. The teams entered the third period tied at one apiece then the flood gates broke open with Kevin Tink tipping in a shot from Scott Paterson who was set up by Jon Janack. Mark Mathews fired home a pass from Doug Dilling only seven seconds later to be followed a minute and 13 seconds later when Paul Dadson and Derek Lamont fed Doug Dilling who made no mistake about it. Kevin Tink got his second goal at 10:28 again set up on a pretty passing play from Dana Peebles and Scott Paterson. Tink wasted no time getting his third goal 16 seconds later, set up by some crisp passing from Scott Paterson and Dana Peebles. This line accounted for four goals and a total of eleven points in the game. Kevin Tink the "Mighty Mite" is the hardest worker on the team, pound for pound, and his hard work had to pay off sooner or later with the hat trick. A total team effort paid off as the Toros had only 5 minor penalties compared to 11 for Oshawa and Bowmanville K.9 ;S E A&P# were able to capitalize for two power play goals and kept their cool remarkably weii. Dan McMullen played on defence for his first assign- ment at this spot this year and turned in a strong perform- ance along with the other two defencemen Paul Dadson and Jon Janack who saw littie rest as the three rotated at the blue line throughout the game. WaItr FranVs Po. Wees SPIit Woekend On Saturday àfternoon, the Walter Frank Pee Wees play- ed the Oshawa Little N.H.L. Red Wings and lost by a close 2 to 1 score. The Toros appeared to be a little on the lazy side in this one and just went through the motions. The Red Wings opened the scoring at the 8.25 mark of the second period on a goal by Cliff McGee assisted by Bil Hay- ball. The Toros tied the game at the 27 second mark of the third period when Danny Weir scored on a nice pass out from behind the net by Deryk Clark. The Red Wings scored the winner at 2.25 when Brad Priotte scored from Dan Smegal. Both Donny Hayes and George Kennett played well in the net for the Toros and Deryk Clark was the best forward for the Toros. The Bulls played host to Cobourg on Saturday- night and played a much more inspired game as they handed Cobourg a 5 to 1loss. . The Toros opened the scor- ing at the 2.16 mark of the first period on a goal by Mike Hamel assisted by Danny Weir. They made it 2 to 0 at the 4.05 mark when Jay Sweet scored from Raymond Cumming and Mike Hamel. At the 5.00 mark, the Bulls made it 3 to 0 when Chris Michelson scored from Deryk Clark and Robert Geidlinger. Cobourg scored their lone goal of the game at the 11.20 mark on a goal by Doug Smith with the Torosplaying a man short. The Toros made it 4 to 1 at the 13.46 mark when Chris Michelson scored unassisted. The Bulls finished off the scoring at the 36 second mark of the third period when Raymond Cumming scored from Chris Michelson. The entire Toros team played well in this one and it would be hard to pick out any one star of the game. The goaltending again was shared by Donny Hayes and George Kennett. It was a very chippy game with Cobourg drawing nine penalties and the Toros seven. The Toros will play the Oshawa Little N.H.L. Canadian on Sat., March 3rd at the Darlington Sports Centre at 6 p.m. Septo-Clean's Minor Bantama Lose at Cobourg, Beat Oshawa By Steve Samis On Friday, March 2nd the Septo Clean Minor Bantams travelled to Cobourg, in the first meeting of the two teams since the playoffs. The Toros were never in the game and looked really flat. Cobourg opened the scoring at 13.14 of the first period and were to get two more before the period ended. Cobourg increased their lead to 4 - 0, four minutes into the 2nd period, but Bowman- ville's Shaughn Houston got the lone Toro goal from Steven Taylor at 5:22. In the third Cobourg scored two more to chalk up an easy 6 - 1 win. Toros vs Oshawa The Toros started quickly as Ron Hopcroft scored at :32 seconds of the first period. Oshawa tied the score at 2:11. Shaughn Houston scored unassisted with 10 seconds lef t in the first period. In the second, Oshawa tied the score once again at 6:58. Then with :30 seconds left, Glenn Mathews stole the puck from an Oshawa defender at the Bowmanville blue line. He broke in all alone, put a beautiful deke on the Oshawa goalie, shot the puck high in the net, over the outstretched goalie to score what turned out to be the winning goal. In the third, Todd Tremblay scored from Glen German at 2:43. Glenn Mathews rounded out the scoring on a semi breakaway with a good low shot at 6:51. Notes - the Toros outshot Oshawa 32 - 19, the Toros took 7 of 15 minor penalties called (all minors). Glenn Mathews had a good game for the Toros. This was a real good team effort. There was good hitting, good scoring chances at each end, and continous end to end action. Mark Hickey and Pete Hughes Win Trophies for McGregor's In Penotanguishone Tourney On February 24th and 25th the Major Atom Toros were bused to Penetang to play in the Penetanguishene Winterama Atom Tourna- ment, winning 2 games and were put out by Collingwood in the 3rd. The Bulls bulled their way to a 6 - 2 win over Downsview and were on the Championship side. The first goal was notched by centre Greg Martin, assist going to Kelly Balson. Defenceman Pete Hughes then scored, assisted by Mark Hickey. Ed Paradis scored next, assist Peter Hughes. No. 10 Kelly Balson scored, assist going to Mike Knight. Mark Hickey scored, Pete getting the assist, again Greg scored, assist going to Kelly and Ed. Greg Martin getting 2 goals, Peter Hughes 1 goal 2 assists. The next game was a little lopsided with the local lads beating Penetang 11 to ZIP, Pete Hughes picking up 3 goals 1 assist, Mark Hickey 2 goals 2 assists, Mike Knight 1 goal 3 assists, Jay Kelly 2 goals 1 assist, Greg Martin 1 goal 1 assist, Mark Smith 1 goal, Dan Moriarity and Chris Moroz i assist. The Toros outshot Colling- wood but lost the game 4 to 3. We were all over Colling- wood's net the last 5 minutes of play but could not get the equalizer. Mike Knight crashed through the Collingwood squad to score the first goal unassisted, Kelly Balson scor- ing next for Bowmanville, assist going to Mike Knight and Ian Wheelock. Captain Jay Kelly scored the last goal, assist Mark Hickey and Chris Moroz. Hooper's Eliminate Lock Hunt' s Down D& R Sp Thursday Night Hockey Hooper's Eliminate Lockes, Hunts Down D & R In the first game Hooper's whitewashed Lockes 5- 0. The game was scoreless in the first period then Osmond put them in the lead early in the second on a beautiful set up by Donaghue and Burns. Going into the 3rd with only a 1 - 0 lead, things were tense until O'Donell blasted one from Caruana and Hooper. Then the roof fell in as Lockes just didn't seem to be in the game after this goal. Parks cracked one home from Burns and Osborne. Smart, after being out forsome time with ijrepicked up his own rebound assisted by Jones and Caruana. Within a couple of minutes O'Donineli put icing on the cake with his second of the night from Smart and Becker. Hooper's and Willoughby kept the Loc7ns teamn to 4 goals in the series and 8 periods of shut-out hockey. As it looks they will be hard to beat in the finals but in such a close league wbo knows wbo will be the victor. In the second game, Hunts waited till the end of the final 219 KING ST. E. 623-4481' frame before they got it ail together and beat D & R 4 - 2, taking a lead of 2 - 1 in the series. Hunt;s power came from two players, Brown and Simpson and they connected for 2 goals and two assists. D & R opened the scoring in the second with a goal from Spider assisted by Farrant and Alldread. Simpson came right back a minute later to tie it up assisted by Brown. Going into the 3rd it was anyone's game as both teams skated hard. Brown finally bulged the twine from Simpson and Dickens. Farrant came back for D & R to tie it up at 2 on a beautiful set up from Allin and Leddy. With less than two minutes to There were no penalties called in the first game, 14 in the last two, 9 going to Bowmanville. Twelve teams participated in the tournament, with 4 trophies handed out, best goalie, best defenceman, best forward and most valuable player, the Toros getting 2, Mark Hickey for the most valuable player and Pete Hughes best defenceman. That is quite an accomplish- ment as there were about 190 boys to choose from. The Collingwood goalie who play- ed so well against us, won the goalie trophy. Defenceman Warren Short played good defensive type hockey, Ken Cameron and Todd Balson shared the goal- tending, and stopped many shots in the first and last games. Good work boys. Acion go Brown came through to go into the lead, again set up by Dickens and Simpson. Simpson sealed the game on a two man breakaway on an empty net with Brown and Copithorn assisting. The league is sorry to hear that D & R are without the services of M. Hewer with an eye injury, and wish him a quick recovery. You can bet D & R with their backs to the wall will be raring to go this week to even the series. Next week D & R vs Hunts at 7:00 and Hoopers are going to slow down their pace and will meet the Oldtimers at 8:30.
