March 7, 1979 Section Two Lions Centre Gets Fresh Coat of Paint 25 Years Ago Thursday, March lth, 1954 George Van Bridger, assistant manager of the Bowmanville Public Utilities Commission has been promoted to manager on the retirement of George E. Chase in September. Bob Gallagher, captain of the Bowmanville Badminton Club, was presented with the Ayres Trophy in the Central Ontario Badminton Tour- nament held in Trenton last week, in which the Bowman- ville club swept every event. Two new business men were introduced by Chairman Ar- thur Hooper at the meeting on Tuesday held in the Balmoral Hotel for - preliminary discussion toward reviving the Bowmanville Chamber of Commerce. The newcomers welcomed were R.P. Rickaby, and the Leslie brothers. Those taking part in the World's Day of Prayer held last week in St. John's Anglican Church were Mrs. J.G. Parker, Mrs. W. Pater- son, Mrs. J. Kerr, Misses Helen and Jane Maguire, Mrs. F. Blunt, Mrs. Wilfred Carruthers, Mrs. H. Antram, Mrs. R. Goheen, Mrs. V. Snyder, Mrs. E. Henning, Mrs. R. Hornigold, Mrs. J. Newman and Mrs. T. Wright. T.A. Reid of Orono was unanimously chosen chair- man of the Ganaraska Authority and Stuart Ryan, Q.C., of Port Hope as vice- chairman. William Cole of Kitchener and formerly of Bowmanville won top honors in the recent Kiwanis Festival held in Toronto in the baritone com- petition. 49 Years Ago Thursday, March 6th, 1930 In the Bowmanville Public School Report for Room 2, Jr. IV the results of examinations for February in order of merit, are Doris Dudley, Grace Rundle, Marjorie Jones, Selma Bartlett, Helen Pritchard, Mary Mutton, Nellie Mutton, Ada Clark, Clara Bellman, Fred Wood, Teacher R. McLeod. The following sold $15.00 or more bonds for West Durham Boy's Work and will receive silver medals. John Jury, Nelson Osborne, George Buckley, Alan Adams, Donald Williams, Douglas Courtice and Gordon Osborne. The On- tario Boy's Work Board with hopes of raising $13,000 by selling bonds, asked West Durham to raise $210. A total of $251.50 was raised making the effort very worthwhile. The men of St. Paul's United Church prepared and served an appetizing and bountiful meal to' the ladies of the congregation, last Friday evening. Highlight of the evening was the program presented by the Iroquois Chief Deyokah. Bowmanville Shieks inter- mediate hockey team were runners-up in the Port Perry tournament last week, being defeated in the finals by Eatons of Toronto 3-2. Each player received a Parker fountain pen. Newcastle is pleased to note that the estimates of the Dominion Parliament for 1930 include the sum of $1500. for repairs to the wharf at Newcastle harbor. NEWTONVILLE Our sincere congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. William Stapleton of Bowmanville, and to Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Pethick, of Enniskillen, who celebrated their Sixty-seventh Wedding Anniversaries, recently. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gilmer, of Cameron, were visitors, here, with Mrs. Agnes Burley, and Mr. and Mrs. Don Vinkle, last Tuesday. The Pastoral World Day of Prayer service was held at Kendal, on Friday afternoon, and those attending from here, included Rev. and Mrs. Aubrey Tizzard, Margaret Elliott, Inez Boughen, Mary Vinkle, Mary Jones and Bea Jones. There was a fair attendance at the Pancake Social, on Tuesday evening, in our Church Hall, when seventy-eight dollars was cleared, for the Special Fund. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Elliott returned home, early last week, from their holiday in Penillas Park, Florida, having enjoyed good weather, and an enjoyable time. At this time, we would like to congratulate Mr. Jack Elliott, who is starting his 50th year with the "Elliott Auto Parts and Garage"! Newtonville U.C.W. met in the Church Hall on Wednesday evening, Feb. 28, with the President, Carole Gardner, in charge, and Shirley Stapleton acting as Secretary, in the absence of Jean Kimball. Members of Mary Skelding's Unit were in charge of the Devotional: Rowena Tizzard gave a reading, Eileen Stapleton the Scrip- ture, with Mary Skelding the "Explanation", and prayer by Acey Farrow, followed by the singing of a hymn. A group in June, (No. 2) and (No. 3) Masonic Ladies' Night, in October. Catering prices were reviewed, with a few changes. The 1979 Budget was accepted, with one omis- sion. World Day of Prayer will be held at Kendal, March 2. An invitation to visit Welcome U.C.W. on April 11th was read. After the Mizpah Benediction, lunch was served by the group in charge. Good Friday (April 13) and Easter Sunday (April 15) services are planned. Mrs. Leone Lane and Mrs. Mary Wade, of Barrie, return- ed home Saturday, from their holiday in Florida. They had accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Ted Watts, of Port Hope to Florida, a couple of weeks ago, where they visited friends and relatives, in Sarasota and Newsmyrna Beach, among other places. Last Saturday, they flew back to Toronto, where they were met, at the airport, by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gray. Mrs. Mary Wade returned home to Barrie, and the others were supper guests with Mrs. R. Stewart, in Toronto. Visitors with Mrs. Iva Farrow, Saturday afternoon were Don Farrow, friend Sharon Lunney, and the latter's sister, Sandy Lunney, all of Bowmanville. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Farrow, of Toronto, visited Mrs. Farrow, on Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hender- son were among those attend- ing "The Home Show", in Toronto Saturday, and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Henderson of Bowmanville accompanied them. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Jones were visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Allan Peters, at Morrish, on Friday evening. Miss Carol Henderson, and friend, Miss Karen Rose, of Kingston, were weekend visitors here, with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Henderson. NESTLETON- CAESAREA Last weekend Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wygerde of Nestleton entertained one of , the exchange students from Quebec. Rosalie Robinson, a student from Polyvalente de Carlton High School, Carlton, Quebec, which is situated on the Gaspe Peninsula, was the guest of their younger daughter, Teresa Wygerde for five days. Many high school activities had been planned for this eventful trip. Nancy and Brian Nicholson of Richmond Hill were home with her parents Rita and Joe Wygerde for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Dayes also called on her brother Malcolm Elford who is a patient in Port Perry Community Memorial Hospital awaiting surgery. Better health soon Malcolm! Mr. and Mrs. Dayes stepped out Wed. evening and enjoyed the Roast Beef Dinner held at the Oddfellows' Hall in Port Perry - later visiting their daughter Lorraine and husband Charles Andrews and family in Prince Albert. Mrs. Alvin Bruce and daughter Marge. of Manchester were Saturday evening supper guests of Mrs. Bruce Heaslip, Nestleton - Mrs. Bruce staying over night. They had brought Mrs. Heaslip home from the Port Perry Nursing Home, where she had spent the afternoon with her husband Bruce. Mrs. Edith Hyland, Nestleton, who is a patient in Port Perry Community Hospital hopes to be home soon. Mr. Donald Thompson is home after having surgery in Oshawa Hospital and gaining strength day by day. We wish these folk all the best. Birthday Celebration Mr. and Mrs. Norman Mairs of Nestleton held a birthday party for their daughter-in- law Carol on Monday night at their home. Those present were Robert, Carol and children, Steven and Katie Mairs, Nestleton and Diane and John Slute and little son Jeremy Jay, of R.R. 1, Oshawa. Caesarea Euchre Club Pres. Betty Maclntosh re- ported winners of the weekly Wed. evening euchre party heldeat the community centre were: lst - Minnie Fisher, 2nd - Bill Ringham, 3rd - Ruth Davidge, Williams' Point. Victor Parsons used Scripture Genesis-22:1-14 and Mark-1:12-15 - basing his theme on "A time of Testing". He left the congregation with these thoughts: "Christianity is a Religion of the Cross - a Religion of glory and it is in the moments of testing that our Faith is revealed. Miss Gail Malcolm sang - "Just a Closer Walk" with Mrs. Joan Groves at the organ. Worhd's Day of Prayer The World's Day of Prayer for the Cartwright Church groups was held in St. John's Anglican Church in Black- stock, Friday, March 2nd, at 2 p.m. Mrs. Ivy Rahm spoke on the theme "Spiritual Growth". Mrs. Linda McLaughlin was organist for the service. Those taking part from the various churches were: Anglican - Mrs. Sharon Umprey, Mrs. Helen Green and Mrs. Elaine Bailey. Nestleton Presbyterian - Mrs. Dorothy Lee. North Nestleton United - Mrs. Norma Frew. Blackstock United - Leader - Mrs. Dora Martyn - voices from the audience - Mrs. Flora Samells - Miss Gail Malcolm - Mrs. Margaret Van Camp - Mrs. Edna Larmer - Mrs. Ruby Van Camp. The meditation based on Hebrews, II was given by Mrs. Ruby Parsons and Mrs. Jean Adams. A social hour was enjoyed after the service. Friends from Nestleton and Caesarea extend warmest congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. John Hamilton who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday last, and wish them many more happy years together. Miss Gail Malcolm was a supper guest of brother David, Joanne and baby Kingsley Wednesday evening of this week. The benefit dance to help raise funds for Mrs. Kathleen Harper and son Brian, held in Nestleton Community Centre Saturday night was a tremen- dous success with a large crowd of friends in attendance. The music (country style) was excellent by a live band and donated free - as was the community centre. A big hand to those who planned this terrific event!
