BEST BUY When does one plus one equal one? For purposes of the new child tax credit, the incarne of one husband added ta the incarne of one wife equals the incarne of one family. And if that family incarne totals $18,000 or less, the mather, or in some cases the father, will be eligible ta dlaim the $200 credit for each eligible child. The child tax credit, which individuals can dlaim when they file their tax returns this year, -is intended ta supple- ment family allowance pay- ments, and as such depends an the total family incarne invol- ved. For married couples wha were living together an Dec- ember 3i of last year, that means the incarne of bath husband and wife. If either one had no incarne, or if either one incurred an incarne loss, the persan claiming the credit would enter nil in the space provided on the application form, Schedule 10. SIndividuals who are single, divorced, separated, widowed or not legaily married as of December 31 must include only their awn incarne if they are claiming the credit. In most cases the credit wiil be claimed by the mother, who is usually the persan recexving the family allowance pay- rnents. If the, parents are living apart and the father had custody of the child, family ailowance payrnents may be made ta the father and in these cases the credit may be claimed by hlm. For couples who rnarried during the year, timing is critical from ea tax point of view. Only the spouse's in- carne since marriage must be included in calculating family incarne. When calculating family incarne for purposes of the child tax credit it is the total net incarne of the spouses that is important. That is, the incarne after certain deduc- tions, as determined on page 2, Uine 41 of the incarne tax return. The net incoméf of bath spouses is transferred from line 41 of the incarne tax return ta the application form, Schedule 10, which was sent out with the January family allowance cheques. Schedule 10 rnust be com- r pleted by the person claixning the child tax credit and included with the incarne tax return and ather information -slips. Complete instructions for calculating the credit are included on Schedule 10. A leaflet entitled You Were Asklng About the Child Tax Credit is also available through District Taxation Of- fices. For 2.8 million familles the effort of completing an incarne tax return and Schedule 10, could mean maney in the pocket.
