8The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, March 14, 1979 Section Two EDWARDIAN POSTCARDS Allan Anderson and Betty Tomlinson of Tottenham, Ontario have over 35,000 postcards of the Edwardian era in a collection started six years ago by Mr. Anderson. (He's the author of REMEMBERING THE Rntîqu.s By Mary Ann Warkman FARM, a book of reminis- cèénces of farming and ranch- ing in Canada.) They selected 650 of the cards for a book published in November by Macmillan of Canada-Toronto called GREETINGS FROM CANADA ($14.95 paper, 29.95 cioth.) The two freelance broad- casters have, shown their collection before, via slides, and have traveiied throughout the country giving lectures. You may have seen some of their cards as part of an article in the IMPERIAL QIL REVIEW availabie at the Bowmanville Library. Unfor- tunately past issues, încluding that particular one, are discarded. The book is an entertainfing way of reading about Cana- da's Edwardian Era, 1900 1916. In putting this collection of postcards in a book and in quoting statistics throughout, the authors follow the style of Edwardîans who enjoyed col- lecting "postais" and keeping themn in albums in the parlour and who also had a penchant for quoting figures such as mileage, hours worked, popu- lations, wages and even their heights. But it is these figures that help describe life as it was during the days when sports were actively partici- pated in and when men tended to sign just their initiais to cards. As postcard collections shouid be categorized so the book is divided into sections on Town and Villages încluding a card of the Queen's Hotel, Oshawa obviously in its heyday; School Days where we learn that attendance was high when there wasn't farm work to be done and Days of Sail where there is a card of the "Coal Dock, Port Bow- manville, Ont." The Big City includes cards from urban Canada and as in ail sections there are mes- sages included from the backs of the cards. One of the messages from Toronto to Wîarton, Ontario, February il, 1907 reads: "I think they have made some mistake here; for Sunday comes too often and stays too long." There are some unusual and rare postcards pictured such as a "Hold to Light" card in which the windows of the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa are illuminated when the card is held before a bright light. Also unusual were the book- mark cards and fan -cards shown in the Noveties section. The Soft Seli shows advertis- r-jy~-TIRE IF~~~1Ï99-DEAN ll~. AV E. II,~ZIOS HAWA ChargexI S unda y Brun h11 - 2 p. jý7 (Ai yu car. i ..e4.5f) per percon) MOO !NN ing cards such as the 1910 Bell Telephone cards put out in a series of 12 that are rated among the best of the Edward- ian advertising cards. When Woollies Were Worn shows cards and messages relating to Canadian winters and one from the Lakefield (boys) School in Lakefield, Ontario says "It's just about cold enough down here to freeze people. If it soon does not get warm we will perish." Under Winter Sportson of William Notman's cards is included of a tobogganing scene where the men would have posed in the studio with Notman then doing a montage to show the men on "The Spil." A Woman's Place shows cards that give the Edwardian view of women such as one showing a woman, cigarette in mouth, leaning against a fireplace looking towards a man on the edge of his seat about to pop his monocle with the caption: "Are you neyer taken for aman, Clara? " "No, are you?" Edwardian studio photo- graphers did a brisk business and homemade photos were aiso popular. The Look of the People shows these such as one of "An Octogenarian Party" with a few maie smilers in Port Perry. The coloured sections are' beautifully donc with particu- larly vivid the Special Dates cards such as from Valen- tine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter and Hallowe'en. The only problem with the colour- ed sections is that they are inserted in-the midst of other categorized chapters. The book is a delight to read, learn from and have fun with. You'Il enjoy seeing scenes of places you have visited or in which you have lived. You'Il get a chuckle from the gossipy messages which often end in "ha ha" as well as from the joke cards which say things like: "Father says: Wine, Women and Song, are 'the ruination of young men. So I have cut out singing."
