4 'Me Canadian Statesman, Letter to Editor 17 Quebec St. Oshawa, L1H 2K3 March 10, 1979 Dear Editor: After reading most of the newspaper articles in the Toronto papers on the Anglican Church and homo- sexuality, I stili find littie unanimity regarding the ordination at least of so-called non-active homosexuals. Personally, I agree with those people who insist on barring homes from the ministry because one should refrain from the appearance of evil (1 Thes. 5:22), because, more importantly, no 'one can predict with any certainty that the habituai sin of deviant thought won't become one of intermittent or avowed practice and because, as Wycliffe Prof. Roland Harrison has bluntly said in part, "Wherever homosex- uality is even hinted at in the Bible, it is soundly condemn- ed." Moreover, a clerical "gay", involved with 50 many people, can and bas become a greater stumblîng block or schismatic to churchgoers than, e.g., an abnormal drinker. Though everybody is a born sinner, he is not a born homo, but can become one, owing probably in part to childhood environment. Yet since man has a free wili, he is responsible to God. for effeminate behaviour which can be forgiven only when he realizes his guilt and need of genuine repentance. There are on record clear cases of spiritual deliverance. By the way, homos should strictly avoid associating with others, especially with militant queers whose defense is based on spurious happiness and self -esteem -that they can't bear to have injured. More than once, in various letters, there was an appeal to church traditions which, I submit, are unwarranted when they are contrary to Holy Writ. In that respect, Jesus Himself rebuked the Pharisees (Mt. 15:2). Biblical- ly, people are ordained or chosen by God. Besides, in the NT the priesthood is also applied to ail true Christians (1 Pet. 2:5,9), which would, in_ a sense, put the laity on a par with the clergy, except for man-made tities like Your Grace, Most Reverend, et ai. A secret vote or referendum on Anglican ordination might be very revealing. And better than "a proud Anglican" would be "a proud Christian." Jim Hilison, minister of a United Church in Calgary, asserts, in effect, that homos are O.K. when it's "a loving and committed relationship". He forgets that "God is love" is different from "love is God", whose love is ethical, not sentimental. Finally, on CFRB the Archbishop quoted, "Judge not, . . ." (Mt. 7:1) without explaining that though it condemns unfair fault- finding, it doesn't forbid Christian discernment ( 1 Thes. 5:21, 1 Jn. 4:1). Any church compromising truth today may compromise morals tomorrow. John Knott Oshawa 257 Poplar St. Oshawa Dear Mr. James: Does your paper ever get results!
