14 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvile. March 21, 1979 WaIt.r Franks'smajor Poe. W..: Win Fierst Interational Tour.y, The Water Frank Major Pee Wees travelled to Colling- wood last week for their first international Tournament and came home the champions. The Toros' first opponents were Thorold, a small team in size but a team that knew ahl the dirty tactics, but the Toros keep their cool and defeated them by a 4 to 0 score. The bulis opened the scoring at the 6:31 mark of the first period on a goal by Danny Weir assisted by Doug Brown. The Toros went up two just nine seconds later when Danny Weir- notched his second with Derek Clark and Scott Heard assisting. The Toros scored two more in the second when Chris Micheson scored from Doug Roy at the 6:55 mark and then at 8:43 it was- Scott Heard scoring from Danny Weir. The Toros' defence piayed a very strong game as did George Kennett in goal to register the shutout. Although they did win this one the boys did not play up to their real potentiai. And in the penalty department, in my opinion, the officiais seemed to favor the underdogs FOe R TH OSE SOUTH THIS - WEEK WE OFFER11 THE î- FOLLOWING "G E T PEC"% 1LS as the Toros pickedup a total of 20 minutes in penalties and five penalties in the last five minutes of the game as Thorold picked up a total of 14 minutes. Game No. 2 Bowmanvllle vs Colllngwood The Tqros wasted no time in showing Colingwood they were in for a rough outing as the Toros scored three goals in the first two, and a haif minutes of the game. At the 1: 30 mark, Scott Heard scored from Deryk Clark and Danny Weir and then at the 1:51 mark it was Chris Michelson scorîng unassisted and at the 2:59 mark it was Scott Heard to put the Toros up by a three to nothing count. The Bulis made it 4 to 0 before the first period was over when Chuck Nash scored from Raymond Cum- mings. Collingwood scored their only goal of the game at the 29 second mark of the second period on a goal by Brent Dillon assisted by Brad Rich. The Toros scored one more ini the second period when Jay Sweet scored from Mike FRESH LE GSI.29lb. STORE SLICED DUTCH STYLE LUNCHEON MEATSI .49 STORE SLICED LB. BACON 1.z69 LB. LOOSE WIENERS 1.291B. The Buils put the game away in the third wîth goals by Danny Weir assisted by, Scott Heard and the, final goal of the game was scored by Robert Geidlinger with Chuck Nash and Raymond Cummings picking up assists. The forwards skated very well in this game and kept Collingwood off balance through the entire game. The defence again as in the first game was a stand out'and the goaltending of Donny Hayes was almost flawless as well. The Toros picked Up four minor penalties as did Colling- wood. Game No. 3 Bowmanville vs Amherst New York We are the Champions! !! The Blîs sat in the dressing roomn before the game. I have no seen such determination on the faces of these boys to win as they had now. The first period of this game saw no scoring but the Toros put pressure on Amherst and played a good part of the period in their end. The Toros continued to put on pressure and were reward- ed at the 2:44 mark when Dannv Weir scored from Scott Heard. Amherst started to put pressure on the Bulîs now and at the 10 minute mark one of their players speared Goal- tender George Kennett who was playing a very strong game in the net. As a resuit of the spearing George was taken off the ice on a stretcher and taken to the hospital to determine the extent of the injury. This put a great deal of pressure on Donny Hayes for the rest of the game but Donny came through with a brilliant performance to save the shutout., This act seemed to make the Toros even more determined as they scored another goal to go up by a 2,to 0 score. When Ray Cummings scored from Scott Heard. In the third period Mike Hamel put on his stick handling performance and turned the Amherst team into knots trying to catch him but lie finally put it into the net to make it 3 to 0. At the 13:30 mark, Scott Heard scored from Danny Weir to put the game and the champîonship away for Bowmanville. This whole team should be con- gratulated for such a fine showing as they held their opposition to only one goal in the entire tournament. It would be unfair to single out any one boy as a star for this team for it was truly a team effort that won it for them. I-E,6ART Major Midgets Blank Midland to Tie Series After dropping the first game in Milland on March l3th, the Van Dyk Midgets went to work Saturday night at Darlington Arena and gave the visitors an exhibition of hustie and skill that sent them home frustrated after being blanked 5 to 0. It was a rugged gamne with plenty of solid body checks as shown in this picture of some of the action around the Midland net where the Van Dyk lads are effectively taken out of the play. The third game goes tonight at eight in Darlington Sports Centre, with the fourth Friday at Midland. Spencer':end Cowan'«Tie 3..3 In Sunday Morning Championship Sunday morning it looked like Cowan's were going to tie up the series with Spencer's when they scored'two in the first period, with goals from John Taylor and Bruce Osborne. Assisting on these two fine goals were Sandy Brown and Terry Baker. In the second period Spen- cer's got on the score sheet with a goal from Bob Howes which was an unassisted one. But then about four minutes later Cowan's rang the bell again with yet another great goal by John Taylor to give hime his second of the game. So this gave Cowan's a 3-1 lead at the end of the second. .In the third period Spencer's came on strong and as a resuit David Ormiston sunk a real team lifter goal bringing the score to 3-2. Ormie's goal was also unassisted. Then at the 10: 40 mark David Ormiston once again put one behind Gary Murphy to tie the game at 3-3 . I would just like to say that these two teams are so evenly matched it's a shame one of them has to be the loser. In the playoff for the Mug, Firth's Meat Men came through the victors, winning two games out of three. Ail Spencer's need next Sunday is a tie to, win the championship, they lead now by 5 points to Cowan's 3 points. Corne see the game Sunday, it's the best hockey in town. Game time 9 o'clock. Delta Faucet iidgets On Saturday, March 1th, Delta Faucet Midgets played Uxbridge at Darlington Sports Centre, earning a weil- deserved 7-4 win. A soiid team effort was evident from the Bowmanville squad with good Sassing and shooting ecoming more prominent with every game. The line of Steve Huisman, Brian Can- field and Jeff Edmondson was flying, Huisman picking up a goal and two assists, Canfield two goals and Edmondson a goal and three assists. Also Huisman was called upon for killing off penalties and did a fine job in this respect. Marc Richards scored two picture goals, showing good moves in front of the net, and Kevin Welsh picked up a well- earned single to round out the Bowmanville scoring. Assists on these goals went to Scott Chapeli and Grant Brock with two each, John Foote and Steve Maguire one apiece. This makes it the fourth win in a row for the Delta Faucet crew who are on the exhibition route preparing, for the Pine Ridge Tournament.' Brian Smith was in goal for Delta Faucet and found the Uxbridge snipers threading the needie and finding the range in the first and second periods. With the score deadlocked at 3-3 at the end of two periods Smith came up with good standup pad saves as his team-mates scored four in a row in the third period, Smith being screened on the iast Uxbridge marker. Delta Faucet Midgets were guests of Manvers Midgets on Monday, March l2th and returned home with a 4-1 vic- tory giving them five straight exhibition wins. Bowmanville completely dominated the play and must be given credit for sticking to good dlean hockey, pickîng up only five penalties. Coombes in goal for Delta Faucet had his shut-out bid spoîled when after making the initial save, iost sight of the loose puck and Manvers scored halfway through the third period. Bowmanville lead 1-0 at the end of the first period, Steve Maguire scoring from Marc Richards and Kevin Welsh. Three goals in 34 seconds gave the Toros a 4-0 lead at the end of the second period. A recent copy of the East York Times gives prominence t6 Mrs. Ford who won fourth place in a playwriting compe- tition held by the Smile Company. The Smile Company is a non-profit theatrical group which tours nursing homes and senior citizen establish- ments, putting on dramatic and musical shows for our elderly. Every year, this company holds a playwriting competi- tion. A panel chooses plays which best depict some aspect of a senior citizen's life. In ail, there were six winners and one honourable mention. Parts of Mrs. Ford's play will be presented on tours beginning in April. Artistic Director of Smile Company, Peter McConnell, wrote in his criticism of Mrs. Ford's work, entitled "Martha", 'Martha is a one- act play, essentially one person is involved in a dramatic monologue. An eighty-seven year old woman lives more in shadows than rustic 16g cabin kitchen and summons Up ghosts from her past.' McConnell described "Martha" as a "beautiful- piece".
