Bowmanville Firemen Battie Blaze in Farmer'a Shed Last Wednesday morning, a fire of undetermined origin did considerable damage to a shed on the farm of Clarence Stainton, on the 8th Concession of Darlington. Here, Bowmanville firemen are pouring water onto the bales of straw to extinguish the stubborn blaze. by Carl Brunt In the final game of the 1978- 79 hockey season Spencer's puJled the upset of the year by defeatîng Cowan's in a really close battle between the two bottom place teams of the Sunday evenipg league. The two top teams, Frank's and Firth's were eliminated in the semi finals. In the game Sunday morn- ing, Cowan's it the score sheet first, and held the score at 1-0 through the first period. Then in the second period, Spencer's late in the period tied the score at one to one. In the third period, David Ormiston who I think was a real stanid out of the game notchied his second goal with the assist going to hard working Geordie Bowan. Then with what looked like thé goal that, would linch it for Spen- BOWMANVILLE ORONO 623-33193 983-9547 INCOME DUPLEX - Newcast le Norfhend. But the ever pressing Cowan's were determined they weren't going, to be beaten and came up.with two big goals by Sandy, Brown and Paul Albright to once again tie the score 3-3. These two goals were a resu.lt of Spencer's getting a littie sloppy in their own end of the rink. It was Bobbie Howes at the 17:32 mark assisted by David, Ormiston who drove in the winning goal past Gary Mur- phy to win the 1978-79 Cham- pionship for Spencer's Realtor's and also making Roly Spencer very proud of his hockey team that he spon- sored. Also, I am sure that Tom Cowan was equally proud of his team even though they lost, but let me tell you it was one of the best final playoffs I've seen in a good many years. So on behaîf of the executive I would like to congratulate all the sponsors, the coaches and every team that participated this season. End of the Trail for Van Dyk'a Major Midgets On Monday night at Darlington Sports Centre, the Van Dyk Major Midgets met Midland in the fifth game of their semi-final playoff series and went down to defeat 3 to 0 before a large crowd. The Van Dyk crew were not playing up to their potential, appearing somewhat disorganized at times. They also were up against a sharp Midland goalie who was stopping everything they threw at him. This series has been a tight one almost all the way, except for a 5-0 defeat the Van Dyk team handed out in one of the early games. Now, all that was left was the traditional hand shake at the end. Scott's Colonel Just One Point Away -frc In a best of seven game s6ries with Pickering the Scott's Colonels Novice Toros are just one point away from taking the "B" championship for the Lakeshore Novice League. In the first four gamnes played to date the Colonels won the fîrst three, their hopes of wraping up the series were dashed when the best we could do was a tie in the fourth game. In that game one overtime period was played, however, the score still remained tied and due to lack of ice time, the series was forced to a fifth game. Considering the penalties that were levied aga'st the Bow- manville team, he Pickering team was un le to take advantage, even when we- Dm Victory were two men short in the last two minutes of regulation time. Scoring for the Toros in this game were Jeff Laird, Gareth Stone 2, Brad Carnegie with assists to Shawn Towner, Brad Carnegie 2, Gareth Stone. The first game of the series was won by Bowmanville 3-1, with Tim Smith, Gareth Stone, and Brad Carnegie scoring with assists to Jeff Laird, Brad Carnegie and Gareth Stone. The second game was won by a score of 2-1 with ýShawn Towner and Brad Carnegie scoring, assists to Eric Janssens, Mike Kane and Gâreth Stone. The thîrd game of the series was just as close with a 2-1 Bowmanvllle - 623-391i OMANVILLE - 3 bedroom raised bungalow with attached garage, 11/2 baths, hardwood floors, fireplace, walkout to cedar deck & fenced back yard, asking $59,900.
