Eldorado' Now Using By-product, A pneviously unused by- product from the Port Hope refiner of Eldorado Nuclear Limited will now be necycled as ammonium nitrate, a widely used commercial ferti- lizer. In making the announce- ment today, Eldorado explain- ed that the ammonium nitrate results as a high purity by-product from the uranium dioxide circuit at the refineny and, in the eanly 70s, was used at cheese pnocessing plants to control odons and enhance bacterial breakdown in their lagoons. As a step toward eliminat- ing this by-product fnom the refining process, the Ontario Ministny of the Environment was asked to approve inciner- ation. The MOE, however, was so impressed with the purity of the matenial that they suggested Eldorado investigate the possibility of placing the ammonium nitrate on the market as fertilizen. With this recommendation in mind, Eldorado then unden- took a series of detailed studies, including field tests on corn fields.
