14 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvie. Mardi 28, 1979, Section Twxo ]Resident TR danaeo heM rce datg Opposed to aenmhdatlr.i h oal dn tgm Newtonville Phone Booth A Newtonvile resident told Durliam Region council last Wednesday he does not want a public telephone bootli in- stalled on the property ad- jacent to his. Newcastle town council recently decided to put a phone booth ln Newtonville on a vacant lot at the four corners of the hamlet (the southwest corner of the Newtonville Road and Highway 2 intersec- tion).- The property is owned by the Region. Russell Westwood of Newtonville said lie is concer- ned that if the phone is in- stalled there, the lot will become a local hangout wliere youths wll "park their fancy cars with eight-track stereos, smoke tlieir funny cigarettes and drink. Witbout cost to the Region, 1 eut the grass, pick' up beer bottles and broken glass and do flot wish the litter to increase," he added. This is a dangerous location for a plione bootli, le argued, because "'children use the vacant lot as a shortcut to school and do not expect nor watcli out for cars pulling off Highway No. 2 to use a phone." A steep grade pre- vents easy access on or off the lot, he noted. Another disadvantage to this location, he remarked, is that la the water "the snow pileup from the snowplow makes it impossible either to park a car or stop temp- orarily." The most logical spot for the phone booth, he suggested, is on tlie Regional rond allowan- ce outside the store across the street. This would be con- venient for Voyageur bus passengers who stop there and during the wînter that part of the road is plowed regularly. Parking is also available. Mayor Garnet Rickard asked Westwood if he had been informed about the possibility of a phone booth bing installed next dor to hlm prior to town council ~ ssing sucli a resolution and ereplied that lie had flot. Counilor Bill Clarke said lie pursued the idea of putting a phone booth la the hamlet because several residents requested it. This location was the only. appropriate one because it had the necessary services. The phone will be on a pedestal land not in a booth, lie explained, and "I can't imagine any out-of-rder ac- tivities going on around it. It will be a service to thie village and travellers on Higliways 401 and Two. 1 don't know whether Mr. Westwood lias any support for his position or not." Counillor Clarke also said "Tlie teenagers in Newton- ville are really not tlie villains tliey have beenpainted this morning." If Regional council decides not to allow installation of the plione booth, said Clarke, "people in tlie hamlet will be extremely disappointed." Council decided to refer the matter to its public works committee for a recommen- dation.
