Further infa - Pubic ibrryor Box 36, Bowmanvilke St. Paul's United Church By Rev. N. E. Schamerhorn "Ride On, Ride On 1In Majestyl' And Jesus rode into the city of Jèrusalem amid the shouts and acclamations of the excit- ed crowds. The people cheered joyfully, waved and placed, palm branches in bis path. The years of obscurity and opposition were in the past. His disciples basked in the glory of this poýular public demonstration. Little did they realize that these same people wbo were now acciaiming Christ as King, would, in a few short days, turn against him and cry for bis crucifixion. And so the drama of destiny unfolded.' The cburcb, tbrougb the intervening ages, bas cele- brated Palm Sunday in its' true meaning. It is flot a happy, joyous festival in retrospect, but rather it stands as a monument ta praise one moment and con- demn the next. There were some in that Palm Sunday crowd who saw Jesus as an eartbly king.- Tbey leaped to tbe conclusion that lie must be the long awaited conquerer wbo would lead the people of Israel in their seemingly never-ending figbt for freedom against their foreign rulers. When they realized tbey were mistaken, the shouts of "Hosanna!' turnied into cries of "Crucify Him, crucif y Himl' They tried to make Jesus into their own picture of a king. His words of love, mercy and justice fell on deaf ears. The 'teacbings of forgiveness and turning the other cheek were forgotten. They could only see their own way and s0 tbey endeavoured to fit Jesus into tbeir pattern. Procrustus, in Greek mythology, was a robber of are represented by bulis in Canadian A.I. units and are popular stops wben foreign buyers visit tbe area. Attica who placed ail wbo.fel into bis bands upon -an iran bed. He made tbem fit the bed. If tbey were too taîl, be cut their legs down ta the right size. If they were too short be put tbem in a stretcher until tbey fit. Today wben someone attempts ta force people ta one particular way of acting, it is called - placing them on Procrustus' bed'. There were many on that first Palm Sunday, and per- haps even today, wbo did this witb Jesus. When he did not fit their prescribed mould, tbey turned against him. There were also those in that crowd wbo could be labelled fair-weather follow- ers. They were always ready for a parade-as long as it did not involve tbem too much. They were ready ta be entertained. Tbey were ready ta cheer. They stopped short of commitment. A third group of people that day were represented by the faithful. These were the ones who loved Jesus. They believ- ed in hlm. Even tbaugb their faith wàs temporarily shatter- ed in tbe next few days, tbey were the ones wbo made up the early church. They sought ta serve the King of their lives. To serve the king means to obey the king 's commands and do bis will. As Kirkegaard put it, "ta be pure in heart is ta will one thing".J We celebrate Palm Sunday pruperly when we accept Jesus as our King and Promise, Him our lives in obedience. There are ail kinids of people who admire Hlm, who proclaim Hlm, wbo accept the benefits of His Body, the church, but true discipleship calis for more. It calis for heartfelt obedience to -the divine way for our lives . The story is told that after Queen Victoria heard a sermon on the second coming of Christ, she said to the preacher, "I wish Jesus would came while I amn still living". When asked why she would make such a request she replied, "I want ta take off my crown and lay it at bis feet. " Christ stili comes today. This Palm Sunday will you crown-him Lord of your life?
