The Canadian Statesman,- Bowmanville, April 18, 1979 9 FLASHBACK - 25 YEARS AGO - Captain Bob Marjerrison of the Cornets Bantam team in the Bowmanville Minor Hockey League was presented with the Miller Taxi Trophy, by Russ Oke, which he accepted on behalf of the team. FLASHBACK - 10 YEARS AGO - On Saturday, a'team from the Bowmanville Department of Recreation Hockey League, visited Hamilton Scott Park Arena to play with an Eastwood Park Hockey Association team which ended in a one ail tie. Sandy Kemp scored for Bowrnanville, -.Mike Parente for Eastwood. NEWCASTLE - Golf Course in Newcastle opened this past weekend, as did Meadowview Mini-Golf course on Highway 2, at Maple Grove. What miserable weather for those so anxious to try out these excellent facilities. The Newcastle Golf Course features 18 holes, par 70, 6,485 yards, which has both public and membership fees. For those not too energetic, they have electric carts, and the food served in their snack bar is tasty. Meadowview in its second year bas many interesting 18 holes to challenge you. Frank Pee Wee Taras played the Don Valley Villagers in their first game and came out an the short end af a 4 ta 2 score. The Taros opened the scor- ing at the 15 second mark of the second period an a goal by Ray Cumming assisted by Chris Michelson and Robert' Geidlinger. Just twa minutes later, Don Valley tied the score on a goal by Kent Marchetti and at the 5:10 mark it was Brian Woods scaring ta give Dan Valley a 2 ta 1llead. The Bulls tied the game at 7.50 mark of the third an a goal by Scott Heard, assisted by Gordie Rager. Don Valley came right back ta take the lead an -a goal by Marchetti and witb just 43 seconds left in the game, it was, Stewart scoring into the open net ta put the game away. Donny Hayes played in the net for the Taras and bad a very strong game. Bowmanville 6, Stayner 4 For the first period af this game it appeared as if the Taras were gaing ta run Stayner out of the rink as they scored four goals ta, Stayner's one. The Buls' first goal was scared by Robt. Geidlinger, assisted by Ray Cumming. Then it was Jay Sweet scaring from Michelson and Daug Roy. Danny Weir made it 3 tao0 on an unassisted effort. Robt. Geidlinger scored bis second goal of period. Stayner made it 4 ta 1 before the period ended an a goal by David Bates. The Taras made it 5 ta 1 in the second on a goal by Robt. Geîdlinger, bis thîrd of the game, assisted by Cumming. Old Timers Win Ahother Tournament at Oakwood Two tournaments and two trophies is a bard act to follow. Bowmanville's King Garden Old Timers formed this year won the 'A' Championship in Orono recently and on Saturday won the 'B' Championship in an eight team tournament in Oakwood, with goalie Grant Wright again winning the most valuable player award. They lost the first game 7-2 to the Oakwood Midnight -Hackers,' won the second from Lindsay Chandler Construction 5-2, and blanked the AA Oakwood Qld Timers 3-0 in the Consolation final. Consolation Championship Game Bowmnanville 7, Qshawa Colonels 0 The cbampiansbip game was a very close game for the first twa periods. The Taras held a one ta natbing lead at the end of the fîrst period an a goal by Jay Sweet, assisted by Mike Hamel and Cbris Michel- son and at the end of the second the Bulîs held a 2 - 0 lead an a goal by Sweet assisted by Geidlinger and Daug Brown. The Taras scored five times in the third periad, the first off the stick of Cbuck Nash. Danny Weir made it 4 taO0 with Clark and Heard assisting. Scott Heard made it 5 taO0 with Clark and Weir assîsting. Chris Michelsan made it 6 tao, wbile Hamel and Sweet picked up the assists. The final goal af the game was scared by Jay Sweet in bis bat trick wbile Hamel picked up tbe assist. Danny Hayes played goal for the Taras and regîstered theshutout. The McGregar Hardware Major Atom Taras 78-79 hockey season bas drawn ta aa close, and I would like ta take this apportunity on behaîf of the boys and their parents ta thank coach Warren Townsley and Manager Ron Thompson for a very successful season and fun for ail. The Taras played exciting hockey at the South London Tourney, winning 2, tieing 1, then getting beat 12 ta 3 by a team from the States, whicb neyer shauld have been enter- ed in this taurnament. They wauld have been classed as a Triple A team, this side of the border, but they knew they bad been in a hockey game, after tangjing with the Buils. The McGregor squad put Wheatley away first, winning the game 7 to3. Greg Martin getting Bow- manville's first goal unassist- ed, Mike Knight scoring next assisted by Mark Hickey and Ian Wheelock. Very much a anc sided game, but a real gaod practice for the Toro goal- tender Todd Balson, wha stopped many many shots. Defenceman Chris Moroz scored the first Toro goal and a big anc for Chris assisted by Kelly Balson. Mark Hickey scared next assist gaing ta Dan Moriarity and Mark Smith. Last Bowmanville goal by Pete Hughes' against gaing ta Mark Hickey. Only 9 penalties called in this game, 4 ta the Taras.
