Natural Resou Spring is fast approaching warmer the w and it is time to begin the less oxygen landscape improvements. Do oxygen means your plans involve altering the growth, more d( stream running through your property? If you want to dam the stream to create a pond, relocate the stream, widen, deepen or straighten it - have you considered what you may be doing? A dam will block fish migration routes to spawning areas further upstream and may destroy an entire fish population. Water held in ponds gets very warm. The trces ater becomes, it hods. Less more algae ecay and more smell! Construction will erode strearn banks, the silt will be carried downstream to cover and destroy spawning beds. Lower water levels and poor water quality will be the overall result. Soon the productivity of the stream will Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 18, 1979 9 LETS GET GROWING ! From Harry Van Belle April Gardening With the way the weather bas been for the past week, it almost seems that we will never have spring this spring, but it is not surprising that we will get a lot of moisture during this month, since the water table is low, and nature will always balance itself, to give us the proper amount of water, sun and light. A good example is the amount of fuel decrease and fish, especially cold water species like trout, will no longer find the stream a hospitable place in which to live. All these problems could have been avoided if each property owner had consulted the Ministry of Natural Resources. Under The Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act, the Ministry of Natural Resources has the authority to advise and give approval for permits that allow for stream alterations that hold back or divert the natural water flow. The total burned area for all fires was only 10.8 acres, with the average fire size being less than one acre. We were unable to deter- mine the cause of the fire in only one instance, while the causes of the other fires were attributed to recreation activi- ties. The fire hazard was high in May and increased to extreme for much of June and July. Increased emphasis was plac- ed on fire prevention in the Lindsay District. Local AM radio announcements during high and extreme hazard periods no doubt contributed to public awareness and the low frequency of fire starts. We believe that public education and awareness helps prevent forest fires and express our sincere thanks to all those who exercised cau- tion and respect for the forest. A reminder for those living in Harvey, Bexley, Belmont and Dummer Townships - the period from the 1st day of April to the 31st day of October is the fire season. Except under the authority of a fire permit, no person shall start a fire outdoors during a fire season for any purposes other than cooking or obtaining warmth. The Lindsay District has many recreational areas which provide users with hours of enjoymnet. There is no enjoyment for anyone if the recreational area is lost to fire because of human careless- ness. Exercise caution and respect the forest - help us make 1979 forest fire free. you use in a house, if you checked the amount of gallons you have used over the past ten years you will find that there is very little difference each year, regardless of a warm fall, a mild winter or an early spring. This winter bas been extremely hard on ever- greens, specially where the wind bas whipped the trees, this has dried out some of the sap in the cambian layer and has turned the color of the evergreens to a brown hue. here is little one can do except feed the tree with a balanced fertilizer, either in liquid form or applied in a dry granular form, an excellent product for this purpose is the Cedar Feeder, it can be applied to the soil or sprayed on the branches making the plant food available immediately, if applied to the soil water it in thoroughly so that it will go right into the root zone and be available to the tree. Prune back damaged and broken branbhes to the part where the green starts, this will make the new growth fill out the damaged area, and will given you the proper form again. Shaping of evergreens should be left until the month of June when the first new growth bas formed, and shap- ing will have a lasting effect for the year, this does not mean that you cannot prune back the evergreens at this time but they will be unsightly until the new growth starts. There is still time to prune your fruit trees, they should be pruned into the form of the pyramid to allow as much sun to come into the tree as possible. Paint any branch that is larger than an inch in diameter with a healing com- pound called Braco, to keep out the insects and the weather. If you have had problems with leaf miner in your Birch trees during the last season, now is the time to apply a product called Cygon 2-E or any systemic insecticide, this product can be painted on the trunk of the tree, about a foot above the ground, then the systemic action will allow the material to enter the sap stream of the tree as the spring starts the sap to flow, and will be carried throughout the whole tree, killing any new formation of the leaf miner. It is important to apply it now when the sap starts to run, if applied after the leaves have formed, it will not do the job and you will probably have the problem again. Now is the time to apply the dormant spray to kill the overwintering insects and the scale which has formed on the branches. Use a combination of lime sulphur and dormant oil, the lime sulphur will kill the scale, and the dormant oil will kI all the overwintering insects, the reason that the two products are sold in separate bottles in the fact that the oil will float on the top, and will give you an improper mixture, so when spraying after mixing the two together keep the mixture agitated to give a proper mix. Crabgrass preventer can be still applied to the lawn, it will form a layer across the two top inches of the soil, through which the seeds can not germinate and will prevent the spread of the crabgrass in your lawn. Apply with a spreader to have an even concentration of the product. Until next week, happy gardening.
