Owner of the specialty store, Mrs. Melva Adams, right, established the shop a year ago and stocks every conceivable item needed in the art of cake making and decorating. Mrs. Adams will be familiar to many as teacher of the night school course in cake decorating at Bowmanville High School. Sugar and spice and everything nice, that's what the Sugar Chalet is made of. The hobby of cake decorating was turned into a business a year ago by owner of the Sugar Chalet shop, Mrs. Melva Adams. The store is located on the main1 street of Newcastle village. Cake Supplies The shop stocks well over 100 varieties of supplies and utensils required te make and decorate a cake. Personal The Bowmanville Drama Workshop has cancelled its gerformance of "The Hollow" ecause of a lack of suitable facilities. Elaine Barber said Friday that the,30 people involved in the play have worked very hard since February and they are tired of rehearsing flot knowing when the play will be performed. It's been very frustrating, she saîd. The play was originaily to be staged Aprîl 5, 6 and 7 and WVhen: TirneAdmission Lsîîoei Apnil 26 - Thursda) .6-00 p.m. -1On:(()p iiiAduts -SI 50 ce&h Oshaiiit i rA imuni S A p n l 2 9 . 1 ) 7 9 1F , d0 - , (i : 0 0 p , n i ( 0 (n p n i îr h ild r e ii u n d e r 1 ' ir f et i c C O sI a %i a .O n tia r i Sauds12'O n ni10On p.mrn aireracceîipnaiedhi ian idit) ,.nd%,12 np rn -61 O n ti cake decorating has become "in vogue" in the past few years and many women gursue it both as a hobby and a usiness. "Cake decorating can be profitable," said Mrs. Adams. A cake decorating course in Peterborough some years ago launched Mrs. Adams on the path that led to the establishment of her store. For the past seven years, she has been teaching the cake Bowmanville High School but the custodian strike forced the drama group to postpone the play until May 10, il and 12. Wîth no end to the strike in sight, the Drama Workshop met last week and decided te cancel the whole production. If there are enough of the same people in the troupe in September they may decide te perform the play in the faîl. Mrs. Barber said the group has been unable to find alternative suitable facilities. We had thought of performing in a church hall with no sets but decided against it. The problem is, she said, we need the use of facilities a week before the play to rehearse and set up. The theatre at Bowmanville High School suits us perfectly. It's tee bad we've been affected by something that isn ,t directly connected with us at ail. C,, 299 DEAN AV E. Formerly a registered nurse, Mrs. Adams much grefers running her own usiness and takes a great deal of gratification from it. "Nursin g has become se impersonal, " she said, "that it just isn't the same kind of profession I was trained te do. " Marsbmallow Magie But her talents do net end at cake decorating or meeting the six days a week demands of her own business. Mrs. Adams was the sole engineer behind the writing and design of her own book titled, "Marshmallow Magic." The book describes practical and decorative methods of producing edible marshmallow treats. The first printing was released in January and already 400 of the 1000 copies printed have been sold. "We are really pleased with the way the book has gone over, " she said. "With the shop and teaching, I just don't have the time anymore," she said. Two weeks ago Mrs. Adams entered a very unique cake of her own design and making in a cake decorating contest in Hamilton and took first prize with her effort. The annual contest was held at Eastdale Square Mail, Hamilton, to celebrate the mall's opening. Mrs. Adams won over contestants throughout southern Ontario. Her cake ranked first in the Special Occasions cake division and second in the professional class. She brought home two first place trophies and a gold medal for her handiwork. Mickey Mouse Cake The Mickey Mouse cake was made by Mrs. Adams as a tribute to the Disney character's golden anniversary year. The iced artistry was spread over a styrofoam form and is quite acceptable in competitive circles providing it could be adapted to a'real cake. The finished Disney tribute measured a foot and a haif by two- feet and five different types of icing sugar were used to achieve the effect. 1Mrs. Adams cails it her Mickey Mouse cake but the finished product took 60 to 70 hours to make and the effort that went into it was by no means "mickey mouse. " A Blue Jay cake which Mrs. Adams also entered in the competition in the novelty division, won second prize. The Blue Jay cake was made entirely of poured chocolate which is a different concept in cake decorating. "The hobby of cake decorating can cost a lot of money depending on how seriously it's pursued," said Mrs. Adams. "Some people think nothing of spending $10 te see a movie on Saturday night whereas I see the money buying a useful cake decorating utensil that can be used over and over,"ý she said. "Tt depends where your priorities lie," stated Mrs. Adams. Many area residents must be giving Betty Crocker a run for her money because Mrs. Adams reports business at the Sugar Chalet has far surpassed her expectations in its first established year.
