Agriculture Mini ster Says Canada 'In Good Hands. Life is better in Canada tban anywhere else in the world, Agric -ulture Minister Eugene Whelan said Monday nigbt during a speech ia Bowman- ville. Talking to about 100 persons attending a Liberal Party meeting at'the Bowmanville High Sebool auditorium, the federal minister pronounced the country's agricultural in- dustry in excellent bealtb. Mr. Wbelan also said that the country bas the best education, the best communi- cations system, the most money in banks, the most cars and many other signs of success, including 400,000 new jobs created last year. Refer- ring to opposition charges that tbe years under Prime Minister Trudeau bave been wasted, Mr. Whelan said, "When anyone tells you it bas been 10 wasted years, tbat's false. " Mr. Wbelan, wbo represents Essex-Windsor riding, was in Bowmanville Monday follow- ing a tour of eastern Ontario. In the agrîcultural realm, Mr. Wbelan said tbat tbe dairy business in Canada is in the best condition of any dairy industry n the world. He saîd when he first went to the House of Commons, people were leaving agriculture. Now, be said that there are tbree or four dairy farmers waiting to take over every farm that selis out. "The poultry industry bas become the bealtbiest it bas ever been, " he said. He added that the hog industry is also in good shape. Mr. Wbelan dismissed the idea tbat the government is downgrading research into agriculture. He said that the Tories dlaim agriculture re- search is being downgraded but added that "notbing could be farther from the trutb". Tbe agriculture minister said 13 per cent of tbe income of a family of four can feed that family for a year. Tbis is less than the amount of money reurd to feed tbe same size faiyin tbe past, be said. "We Liberals have notbing to be ashamed of when we talk about Canada," Mr. Wbelan stated. He added that be is confident bis party will be on the government side of the bouse following the upcoming election and predicted a win for Liberal candidate Dr. Ian Wilson at the polîs May 22nd. The agriculture minister claimed during bis remarks in Bowmanville tbat all "good" Tories are voting Liberal in this election wbile tbe "bad" Tories are still voting conser- vative., Dr. Wilson told bis audience that the federal election tbis year is all about Trudeau's record.
