Mr. Harry Wade, Mrs. Marilyn Martin and Rev. David Spivey attended the Bay of Quinte Conference at Trent University, Peterborough on the weekend. Newcastle Nursery School and Day Care The past week, the chiidren, staff and parents volunteers took advantage of Police Week to take a trip to our O.P.P. facility. Everyone inspected Mrs. Yarrow's office, the celis, the dispatch office, and the finger-printing apparatus - it works! The children also tried out the motorcycle and had a turn at the cruiser's siren. (Hope none of the neigbbours was sleeping!) It was as successful outing, thanks to Constable Schultz and staff, Mrs. Yarrow, Mr. Powell, and Mr. Hardîn. Many thanks also to Mr. Piels, Mrs. Wiliams, Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. McArthur for giving their time to chaperone this trip. We wound up the morning by celebrating J.J. Piels' fifth birthday. Matthew Strutt's second birthday was on Thursday. Registration for Nursery Schooi in September will be accepted from now until the end of dune. Anglican Church News At the service at St. George's Anglican Churcb on Sunday, Rev. Allan Haldenhy spoke on the theme of Ascension Day, Christians have a joy and confidence at this season of the year that should be with them in al their daily living. The Young People had their business meeting on Sunday afternoon and the Feilowship Club met at night. The Car Rally is dune 10, starting at the Parish Hall at 2 p.m. This is a great family, event, ieading to a picnic area. The entry fee is two dollars. Bring your own lunch and picnic equipment. You might win a nice prize for foilowing directions correctly. Visitors are weicome. St. Georges Anglican Church Women met on Wed- nesday evening to finalize plans for their Salad Supper on dune 6th. Mrs. Lyn Linton, Neil Yates and Grace Haldenby attended the Women's Cursillo in Aurora. There was a record group and a great spirit of feilowship. United Cburch News On Sunday, May 27th the annual U.C.W. Service was held at Newcastle United Church with President Kath- leen Powell conducting the Service. Flowers gracing the Sanc- tuary were fromn the funeral of Mrs. Edna Aluin, a faithful life-time foilower of the church. Mrs. Gail Rickard toid the children a story about caring in God's Worid. Mrs. Margaret Eliiott, Pickering guest speaker, was introduced by Mrs. Annabelie Rickard. Mrs. Eliiott has served as President of the U.C.W. worked with the Y.M.C.A. andWomen's Inter Church Council. Her message, Women according to Jesus, examîned the role of women in Jesus' day, His attitude to women and our attitude in 1979. The Sweet Charity Singers of Oshawa rendered two speciai selections which were greatly enjoyed.. The Generai Meeting of the U.C.W. will be held on Monday June 11. Pot iuck dfinner wil begin at 6:30 p.m., after which special guest speaker, Mr. Godfrey will give an illustrated talk on his recent trip to China. Niewtonville Mrs. Leone Lane, with Mrs. Doris Lunman, of Gananoque, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gray, of Orono, attended the Annuai Postmasters' Conven- tion, heid in Sudbury, last weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Carroll were also among those attending. On Monday, May 2lst, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gilmer, of Port Hope, were luncheon guests with Mrs. Violet Gilmer, and, later, ahl three drove up to, Soper Creek Park, Bowman- ville, to see the E.O.B.A. League Opener, between that home team, and the Port Hope Senior Fiyers. Incidentally, the Flyers won the game 12 - 10. Mr. and Mrs. Don Vinkle were Thulrsday visitors with Mr, and Mrs. Clarence Gilmer, at Cameron. Mr. and Mrs. Richard MacCarl of Whitby, and Mr. and Mrs. Mason Parliament, of Cannington, were supper guests, Thursday, with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Fletcher. Mrs. Leone Lane, with Mrs. Gloria Gray, attended the Kinettes' "Mothers' Dinner", and~ evening entertainment at "The Acres" on Thursday. Glad to hear Mrs. Milligan was able to return home from Oshawa General Hospital, Thursday. Mrs. Mary Vinkle, and Mrs. Bea Jones, with Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Jones, were among those attending "The Greater Europe Mission" dinner, and evening entertainment, at "The Holiday Inn," Oshawa, on Friday. Weli over two hundred enjoyed the occasion. There were nine tables in piay, at the Card Party in. Community Hall, Friday evening, with these winners: 50-50 Draw, Richard Weir- meir, high lady - Norma Moffat; high man - Scott Yeo; ladies' draw - Jean Payne, Bessie Stephenson; men 's draw - Bill Morley, Ian Purcell. ss Cindy Brown ieft for uornwaliis, Nova Scotia, Saturday evening, where she begins her basic training for the Armed Forces. Mrs. Leone Lane had a luncheon Thursday for Cindy. Mr. and Mrs. Len Green, of Cobourg, and Mr. H. Toms and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sid Brown attended, where 'she was presented with a travelling alarm dlock from Leone, Bill and Fern Lane. Mildred and Len Green gave her her "Identity Bracelet." Wednesday night, her parents entertained Sid's famiiy, who gave her luggage. The family and ail her friends wish her the best of everything, in this new adventure! Our Annual U. C.W. Anniversary service was held here Sunday morning and Newcastle Hockey Teama Hold Closing Ban~quet The Newcastle Bantams were this year's Ail Ontario Champions in their division. Each member of the team was presented with an Ail Ontario Ring. Receiving their rings from Bob Stilcs and Councillor Keith Barr are Dan Wagar, Bob Dwyer and Barry Goulah. guest speaker, whose theme was "The Some Day Christian", leaving us ail with food for thought. The U.C.W. Choir sang two anthems "Spirit of Faith", and "Lead Me, Lord", with Carole Gardner at the organ. Usherettes were Margaret Elliott, Doris Chrysier, Caro- lyn Gilmer, and Inez Boughen, who aiso took Up the offering. President Gardner mentioned the purpose of the U.C.W. and the fact that this organization was first formed here, eighteen years ago. Next Sunday the service wili be in charge of the "Youth Group", with presentations and awards, later. Sunday dinner guests with Mrs. Bea Jones, included Mr. and Mrs. Doug Drinkwalter, of Port Hope, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Savery, Oshawa, and Mr. and Mrs. Melville Jones. Sunday visitors with Mrs. Agnes Buriey were Mr. and Mrs. Ron Burley of New- castle, Mr Douglas Burley of Bridgenorth, and Miss Carolyn Reynolds of Peter-, borough, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gray and girls of Orono visited Mrs. Leone Lane, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Boughen,,with Mr. and Mrs. Murray Payne, were among the many attending the Dedication Service, and tour, foilowing, at the new Seventh Day Adventist Church, Bow- manvilie, on Sunday after- noon. We understand this will be open to viewers, at least three evenings this week, and is weli worth going to see! The Minor Hockey League's Wind-Up Banquet for the 1979 season, was held Sunday afternoon in Clarke High School. Awards were given out, and a wonderfui meai enjoyed. Donald Ogden and Ken Gilmer were among the local boys attending. Mr. Ken Fletcher with his son Don attended the Blue Jay game in Toronto, Saturday. Mrs. S. Gordon and Master Scott Yeo, were Saturday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. W. Boughen, Mr. and, Mrs. Jim Gilmer, Mr. Phil Gilmer, and Ken, and Mrs. Violet Gilmer, were among those attending the bail game in Newcastle Sunday afternoon where the home team piayed the Port Hope Senior Fiyers, the latter team winning by the score of 14-4. Mrs. Violet Gilmer was a supper guest, later, with Mr. and Mrs. Phil Gilmer and family. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Ton spent the weekend in the north country. DRUG STORE ROBBED A quantity of drugs was stoien during a break-mn at Alex McGregor IDA Drugs late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Co-owners of the drugstore located at 5 King St. West, Art Evans and Mark Borutskie said the thieves were înterested only in narcotics. Other than the damage to the front door resulting from the forced entry, nothing else was touch- ed. The break-mn was investigat- ed by Durham Regional Police Constable M. Basic. Drn R.K. The guest of honor at the Newcastle hockey banquet held on Sunctay at Clarke High Sehool w'as Detroit Red Wings goaltender, Jim Ruthorford. Jim w'as presented with a gift from the Newcastle Hockey Association. Scott Hooper had the honor of presenting Jim With the gift.
