6 The Canadian Statesman, B3owmanvile, JuIy 25, 1979 Section Two Rotary Club Told C-ommunity Plays Keym« Role In Mental H"ealth hand it requires a consciousness of conservation so that the sulent srng vigil in a stream can bei repeated another year. By Wilmot Creek in particular today's fishermen might pay a sulent tribute to Samuel Wilmot, an enterprising canservationist of the 1800's whose efforts combined private profit and public spirit. The story of Wilmot's Newcastle Fish Hatchery is told in Helen Schmid and Sid Rutherford's history of Clarke Township, Out of the Mists. In the early 1860's Wilmot observed the spawning behaviour of salmon in' the stream near his farmhouse and also the steady decrease in the species caused by excessive fishing and the progressive silting of the gravel beds as a result of lumbering. Wilmot began experimenting with artificial p ropagation of salmon in his basement and despite limited success obtained government funding and established a fish hatchery in the village of Newcastle. Over 155 million fish were produced in a 50 year period and laktes and streams throughout Ontario were stocked with the hatchery's fish. In 1876 the Canadian llustrated News ran a two page spread on the Newcastle Fish Hatchery and made special mention of the museum on the site. Wilmot's Natural History Museum contained stuffed animais ranging from, deer and brown bears to non-native crocodiles and a shark with a mouthful of red rag. In other ways Wiimot's operation showed a progressive attitude towards work and nature. The Hatchery's light and the street illumination in Newcastle Village bath derived' fromn electricity generated at a neighbouring grist mili. Wilmot's ultimate achievement occured at the More than 15,000 people are expected to attend the Great International Fisheries Exhibition in London in 1883 where he was awarded a gold medal for demonstrating the hatching and rearing of salmon. 1Samuel Wilmot combined a l9th century entrepreneurial genius with a concern for the public value of his work. He demonstrated the interplay of technology and the landscape not only in the use of local power sources but in the return of species ta the environment and in a sincere desire to educate people about their surroundings. A historie plaque marks the site west of Newcastle but it is a fisherman b y a bridge whose patience and independence are the real monument ta Samuel Wilmt's work., Durham Central Agricultural Fair ta be held this faîl in Orono. It is also suggested that 50 per cent of the persans now in hospital are there- because of an underlying mental or emotional cause. Far example, Mr. Lunie suggested that a businessman may bd in haspital for ulcers or heart trouble. But the original cause of is physical problem may be an emational one such as an inability ta cape with stress. It is statisties like these which back the Canadian Mental Health Associatian's dlaim that mental illness is the country's number ane disease. Rotarians were informed that since the Association was formed 60 years ago, many matters reiated ta the. care and treatment of mental iliness have changed. For example, Mr. Lunie explained that the emphasis -is away from treatment in institutions. Instead, treatment in the cammunity is recommended. Mr. Lunie poited out that in 1972 the Whitby Pshychiatric Hospital had 1200 patiepts on record but today there are less than 300. "Mental illness and mental health is samething that is created in the community and bas ta be treated in the community," Mr. Lunie said. For example, he noted that schitzophrenia has sometimes been portrayed as a matter of split personality but added that it is really cused when persans do not perceive the world the same way as the rest of us. Althaugh medication is being used ta treat mental illness, Mr. Lunie explained that it does not eliminate the> cause of the disease. "Ail it does is manage some of the symptoms," he said.
