About thirty thousand fire- arms acquisition certificates have been issued since the new law came into effect on January 1. For one week in September, the Chatham area wilI experience the fastest popula- tion growth, in the province. More than 200,000 people are expected to arrive in the area between September 25 and 29. The reason for this spurt of growth is the International Plowing Match and Farmn Machinery show. The match, sponsored by a different county, region, or district each year, is being hosted by Kent County this year. The match was last held in Kent County in 1919. The event will be held on a 250-hectare (700-acre) site on the Ian Maynard and neigh- boring farms, five kilometres (three miles) south of Chatham on Highway 40. When the match began in 1913, the plowing competitions were the major attraction. Now, theý farm machinery show has taken over the major impact of the show, says Art Peppin of the Agricultural and Horticultural Societies Branch. "The farm machinery show features 600 exhibits of the latest farm machinery and allied industries," he says.
