Warmest Regards, Katherine Henderson Grace McConnellI Publicity Committee, Mental Health-Durhamr. To the Editor, On May 16, 1979 1 stood in line for over an hotur to enroli my son in the soccer league for 7 and 8 year olds. "IJlow lucky, 1 thought, when 1 finally reached the counter and there were sf111 openings. But Affer watching our team play the first three games, of which my son spent the majorify on the sidelines, along with 2 or 3 other boys, I phoned the coach to inquire if the boys would soon be getting equal playing time. "No", he said, "somne boys play better than others. " Admittedly my boy is net one of the better players on the teatu but we did pay the same amount of money to join the league as the other boys and how can a chiid be expected to improve when he piays an average of 3 to 4 minutes a game if he's lucky enough to get on at ail, while some others play the whole game. What ever happened to teamwork and sportsmanship and most of ail fairness and encouragement? Is winning so important that a child must already face the fact thaf if he isn't a "super star" et age seven he won't be aiiowed to play. Our team placed second in the finals thanks to the better players on the team, but how discouraging to those who neyer got a chance to contribute. A vote of confidence should go to those coaches who believe team effort and fun are more important to a seven year old than winning. Unfortunately, our coach was nlot one of thetri Mrs. L.
