Helene Ann Bate, R.N., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald R. Bate, Peterborough, recently graduated from Sir Sandford Fleming College with a diploma in nursing. Helene has accepted a position at the Diagnostic Centre Hospital in Houston, Texas. Letter to Editor Dear Editor, When the 1979-1980 Siate of Offîcers for the Bowmanville Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society was published, on November 7, the synibol of the Cancer Society, the caduceus, was printed upside down. This award of hope will flot be laid aside until the' fight against cancer is won and until then it points upwards. The origin of the symbol actually' goes back thousands of years- to the Creek god Aesculapeus whose symbol. was a staff with a serpent twined around it. Thtis staff, sometimes called a caduceus, came to be the badge of the medical profession. The Canadian Cancer Society took this symbol and changed it slightly into amore militant form. Instead of a staff , we have a sword. The serpent remains. For countless centuries it has been a token of renewal of, health and strength. In using the caduceus as its proud symbol, the Canadian, Cancer Society is informing- the world of the war it is waging on cancer, of the hope* that the- Society has for renewed health for all who- may have this disease, and of its final objective of banishing this disease from the face of the earth forever.
