Here at Bowmanville High School the students are getting restless. They can hardly wait for the Christmas holidays to arrive. Marketing students have been busy working on display windows. They are not yet completed but I am sure they will be worth waiting for. The Christmas Assembly this year will be held on December 21. Get an act together now so you will have a chance to show your talents. Rumors have it that Mr. Reed's Theatre Arts 351 class will be doing a skit. Watch for them. . . . More next week. However, one member of council warned that services may have to be eut back in other areas to cover the increased cost of the expansion in the finance1 department. "If we increase staff we're going to have to eut back on services," said Councillor Jasper Holliday. Members of council agreed, however, that extra help in the finance department is needed. The plan to expand finance department staffing calls for the immediate hiring of a senior secretary, followed by the hiring of an intermediate accountant in the middle of 1980. Extra office accommodation will also be needed at the Bowmanville Town Hall. Total cost is expected to be $29,000 during 1980. Newcastle council has agreed to prohibit parking on Queen St. from Liberty to Lambert in Bowmanville. The no parking regulation was recommended by Newcastle's public works eommittee. Councillors representing the Town of Newcastle on the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority and the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority have been re-appointed for a second year. Ward One Councillors Ann Cowman and Jasper Holliday' have been chosen to serve on the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority. Councillors Bill Clarke and Keith Barr have been re- elected to serve on the Ganaraska Authority. Newcastle Council bas given MPP Sam Cureatz a vote of thanks for his efforts to buy Problems Solved at Hampton's Miii Pond Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard announced Monday that problems at the Hampton Mill Pond appear to have been solved. "This situation in Hampton has been rectified to the satisfaction of CLOCA, the public works department and the fire chief," said Mayor Rickard during a meeting of council last week. In a memo to council, Public Works Director Jack Dunham noted that CLOCA will raise the level of water in the pond to accommodate needs for fire prevention. Newcastle has been given until the middle of January to hand in its report on the school. In addition, a date of December 14 has been set for town staff to hand in a report on the concept of land use at Pine Ridge. Mr. Cureatz noted in his letter to Newcastle council that the provincial minister of government services is anxious to get all of the information as soon as possible. "If the town is interested, I urge you to act immediately so that the opportunity of utilizing this facility is not lost," Mr. Cureatz said. Newcastle council has invited an expert on nuclear waste disposal to meet with its hydro liaison committee. A representative of Atomie Energy of Canada Limited bas been asked to attend a future meeting in order to keep members of council abreast of developments in the field of nuclear waste disposal. Councillor Keith Barr said Monday that council should go on record as opposing suggested phone rate increases being proposed by Bell Canada. The Ward Three councillor noted that there is a proposal to charge phone customers according to the number of phone calls made. He said he was against this sort of change in the phone system. The issue was referred back to Councillor Barr to obtain more detailed information on the Bell proposal. Councillor Ivan Hobbs noted that in the past, council bas been batting zero in influencing the phone rates suggested by Bell Canada.
