ToUday 's Woman by Beverley Martin A question that is often asked of me and my staff is "Do you think frequent perming is injurious to the hair? " Today the average client receives a perm service every three to four months and short harabout every two SPE CI1A L FA&LCON TV 426 Simcoe St. S. , Oshawa, Telephone 723-0011i Guaran tee on ail parts and service months. It is necessary to consider each case individually, as no one statement of frequency can be made to cover al situations. The frequency of perming depends upon the rate of hair growth, the length of hair previously wav- ed and the type of style previously worn and'the present condition of the hair. Regular conditioning treatments usually once a month, keeps the hair in as normal a condition, as possible for good perming resuits. When I ,,a nalyze a client's hair before giving a perm and find that the hair is not in good enough condition to be permed thiey usually want to know why. Some already know why - they have abused their hair by bleaching it excessively or coloured it at home or exposed it to the hot summer Sun and chlorinated pools. But for others the reasons can be a littie more subtie. Usually after a few questions we find out that they shampoo their hair every day or every other day. They use Brand X shampoo which happens to be a very harsh aikaline shampoo. Yes - they do use a blow dryer and curling irons - No they don't use anything on their hair to protect it from the intense heat from these implements. If their hair is of the fine, limp variety this can be very damaging. Others who may not do any of these things to their hair can stili have very weak hair due to illness or poor dietary habits. The condition of the hair does not stay the same from year to year, or even from week to week and in my opinion hair- condition is the most important factor in obtaining the best resuits from ail salon procedures. Beverley is the owner of a local beauty salon, The Style Shoppe, and any beauty related questions can be sent to her in care of the Canadian Statesman. GM NIews Earle H.
