4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvilie, December 12, 1979 Letters to the Editor December 10, 1979 To the editor: We are writing in regards to the by-law which was passed at the meeting last Monday concerning the ban of bicycles and tricycles on sidewalks. We agree fully that sidewalks are not raceways for bikes or trikes or that store-fronts are flot parking spots for them éither. We are- mostly concerned over our young children who ride their trikes and bikes on the sidewalks. We agree that children should be taught to yield the right of way to pedestrians walking on the sidewalks. In the paper, Mayor Rickard states he didn't think that the by-law would affect toddlers on trikes or bîkes but a by-law being passed, should be enforced. So where does this leave our youngsters to ride? Does this means that if we let our youngsters play with their bikes or trikes on the sidewalks instead of the road, we will be subject to a fine? If so,, you are making al mothers of youngsters choose between the safety of their children and the by-law. Which would you choose? Bowmanville, Ontario Dec. 9,1979 Dear Sir; Over the years I have read on many occasions where the downtown merchants are con- cerned about the mails, how 73 cents of our shopping dollar is spent out of town, and how the town council is trying to find ways of attracting more shoppers to the core area. Well, I'm not sure I can tell you what will bring people downtown, but 1 do know what keeps them away. Late last Friday afternoon, I took my family to dinner and parked my .car on Temperance St. and fed the meter. We had an enjoyable supper, and decided to take a look at a few of the store windows. We particulariy adm-ired McGregor's Drugs renovations. When we return- ed to the car, there was a $2 Christmas greeting from the Town of Bowmanville. Recause we lingered over our meal, and enjoyed the windows, I 'was about 10 minutes late. The ticket was placed on my, car at 5:56 p.m. and 1Ireturned about 6:l10p.m. place, you probably wouidn't have been able to find a parking space at ail, it would have been fiiled by someone leaving their car there ail day.
