In a report to the Durham finance committee Thursday, December 13, Finance Commissioner Jack Gartley stated that excise tax on gasoline and diesel fuel would hit the police and works departments. "It, is considered that the implementation of the policy would provid&- opportunities for broadenîng the experience of participating teachers and assist the board in maintaining mobility of staff," said Director of Education Douglas Sifton in a report to the board. Mr. Sifton said five neighboring school boards bave shown an interest in the exchange program. H1e added that there is a possibility of others being involved in the future. The set of policies governing teacher exchanges states that a valid teacher's certificate and permanent contract would be required for 'staff taking part in the program. The teacher would have to act as bis or ber'own broker in contacting a potential exchange teacher. Ahl excbanges would bave to be recommended by the teacber's principal and tbe board. that the extra tax would cost the public works department $165,000 per year and tbe police department would be faced with an added expense of $90,000. An increase in the employer's contribution towards unemployment insurance will also affect the Durham Region. Mr. Gartley stimated that unemployment insurance premiums paid by the region would rise 18 per cent or $70,000 during the year.
