The improvement of the local track was due to the promotion of the Orono Turf C]lub who conisists of: Chairnian, W.E. Armstrong; Sec.- Treas.,1 S. B. Rutherford; and a com- mnittee ol Jack Reid, A. W. Glenney, L. Hooey, Junior West, Wm. Reid. In this sh ort write-up we have not been able to cover ail sports, sucli as the Public and High School Field days, the Badminton tourna- ments, Tennis and a great. number of other activities. The Orono Red Cross Society have and are stili promoting the Water Safety Campaîgn, to insure that every chîld not only is able to swim but are able to assist in the safety of swimmers.., Another sport which prevails in the Orono area is that of skiing. The Oshawa Ski Club operate their club just a few miles north and east of Orono where thousands of skiing enthusiasts enjoy this sport during the winter ,.nonths. The club is lo- cated two miles east of Kirby off Highway 115. The hili, which has numerous ski, trails, has heen de\ eloped both for the novice and for the advanced s_ier. Tîhere are ihree tows which operate every week-end.« Added to this is a new ski jump for those who favour this part of the sport., i 0f course the Chalet is the meeting i Flace for everyone wvho skis at the hili. Within the past year there has been set up in Orono a Recreation C-mmssn vho will assist such or- jganizations as the Athietie Associa- lion in providing s'ports and recre- ation for young and old alike. Last year and Art Group held weekly 'lasses cWring the winter months with a qualified instructor. The Or- ono Dramatc Players have also add- ed much to the cultural side of com- rnunity if e and'are a most active group of aspirants. In Orono xve are fortunate in hav-, ing Brownies and Girl Guides for 'h '~ris and Cubs anid Boy Scouts for the bDys. Both programmes are very successfully operated under capable leadership. The Association, to mention just a f ew of the clubs which has corne under their jurisdiction, are H~ock- ey from Atom to Junior; .5oftball, both boys and girls; Hardball from Pee Wee to Intermediate; Figure Skating, Swmming, Tennis, Bad- fminton; a rounded out Park Activi- ties under supervision, in the sum- mer time and many more. The first Ontario Championship was won by the Orono Orphans Junior Hockey Club in 1948-49 and thte same Club won the Ontario I H&Kley Intermediate, Champion- J ship in 1959-60. The Orono Intermediate Hard Bail Club won the Ontario Basebali. The Orono Figure Skating Club is another of Orono's active organ- izations which promotes each win- ter figure skating ,for the children of the area. Their carnival, held each year, is one of the most colour- fui and 'talenïted events of the win- ter season. The meTnbrship in this club numbers around seventy-fiv'e.' Look ing to another sport -activity in this district is Harness H{orse Racing. The local Turf Club have spent a lot of time and moriey on improving the local race track to make it second t onone in this dis- rict.
