PIONE 623-5757 Vau Bele Gardeus Highway No. 2, West of Bownianville The opening night audience for "South Pacifie" being stajged in the Bowmanville Town Hall on Tuesday evening was quite liberal Jn the pronouncement of their approval for this Rogers and Hammerstein musical. The production continues for the re- mainder of the week concluding on Saturday evening. The, play is sponsored by 'the Rotary Club of Býowmanville, the' Drarna Work- shop and tbe Recreation Depart- ment. -The play is based around the love affair of Ensign Nellie For- bush, a Most down to earth, and wholesome girl and the dignified Emile de Becque during a veriod of the last war. The setting, of course, is the south sea islands. The songs are familiar to Most age groups and have been taunt- ed on the. air for years. Mrs. Betb Wilson. who plays Nellie Forbusb bas a pleasing voice and did portray ber feel- ings to tbe audie~nce. This was especially so, when she flitted a- bout following ber realization of her love for. de Becque. The scene in de Becques garden prior to this outburst of jubilation, was tbe first meal spark in the open- ing production.ý Emile de Becque played by Ross Cottonbas possibly the best voice in'the entire cast and in bis closing number be was su- perb witb bis -rich mellow tones and true pitch. -South, Pacific" was neyer n o- tUcd for being a lively play and in sectidns it does drag. Tbe open- ing is not stron£g and with tbe Iack of funds ta provide a spec- tacular setting or a sound musi- cal JacJçground the. icing beeomes a littie thin. To the rescue, cones tbe maie chorus and Luther Billis played by Terry Black. Unfortunately botlh tbe male and female chorus- es are used sparingly throughout the play. -Doreen Kitney as Bloody Mary and ber daughter Liat played by Carol Wight are two contrasting personalities 'which were most e- vident on the stage. The schem- ing mother, earning her own way in life, was well portrayed and most convincing. Three nights remainîng to sece South Pacifie. Curtain time for 'South Paci- fie' is 8:15. This is one of the four ,major yarding areas in the Lindsay dis- trict, oind althougli snow condi- tions so far this winter have been far from heavy and crusty many deer are already usiihg it. Recent _snowfalls will doubtless sec more deer crowding into the cedar covE,% areas there. liard- wood browse that is within reach of deer around these cover ar1aý is scarce. The work to be done will. provide a fresh, coninuing supplY of hardwood buds and tenders shoots for, tlw deer for this and several winters to corne. Similar work is well under way in Chandos Township. Already this year winter projects .h lve been com-pleted in Cavendish Towvnsbip inPeterborough Cty., and Cardliff and Harbura Town- shîps in Haliburton County. A.
