BYPASS FOR SALMON TROUT The rninistry of natural re- sources anticipates that a few years will see a much larger population of rainbow trout in the Ganaraska River. The reason for such optim- isrn is that for the first time in 84 years, rainbow trout and salmon in the Port Hope area of Lake Ontario will soon be able to bypass Corbett Dam to swim 68 miles up the Ganar- aska River ta the spawning grounds. The project was the resuit of efforts by the Town of Port Hope, the Ganaraska Conser- vation Authority, the Corbett Dam Memorial Comrittee and the rninistry of natural resources. ,The original dam, built by Dr. Corbett in 1889, was washedaway that same year. A Inter wooden structure also was washed away in 1908 and finaliy replaced with a cernent dam which,,though it blocked the trout from migrating upstream, kept the Ganaraska free of lamprey eels. Within the exisiting dam, a fish ladder will be constructed ernpioying new lamprey con- traI methods.
