He summarized the situat- ion by saying, that it is possible that most of the problems can be solved by maintained discipline, except for that of noise., After.reading this report, Mr. Doug Moffatt, committee mem ber stated that Mr. layng should bc commended for his efforts. BY'SHELLEY LOUCKS MAJOR SURGERY PROPOSED ON REGION RIDINGS Conînuted from page replace the old Durham County Riding now held by Conservative MPP Alex Car- ruthers. The ridîng, would include East Whitby. The existing Durham riding would be split four ways. Besides Newcastle joining Durham East, Hope Township would join Northumberland and Port Hope Ridings, Man- vers and Canvan Townships would join Victoria -Ha libur- ton and old Cartwright Town- ship, now part of Scugog Township would join the new riding of Durham North. BIG llAG The new riding would take i ail of what was Ontario Riding except Rama and Mara Townships, at the extreme tip of the old riding. As weil as Cartwright, East Gwillimibury Township would be added to the riding. The fourth -provincial riding in the region. Ontario South held by Environmnent Minister Williamn Newman, would lose two areas to other ridings and gets a new name - Durham West. The riding would consist of Pickering, Ajax, and Whitby West Rouge, the western community lost by Pickering to Scarborough under region- aI government, goes to Scar- borough West. East Whitbv Township goes to Durham East. Thus the four ridings in the region would closely follow the new. regional boundaries with the exception of Durham North which includes East Gwillimbury. Oshawa riding would be 'fianked by Durham West and Durham East with Durham North just that to the northi. NOT HAPPY Oshawa MPP Dr. Charles Melveen said that the redis- tribution will take away a lot of his Tory support in the, north and east end of Oshawa. In speaking with Mr. Alex Carruthers, who is now the miember for the Durhamn riding, he said if would be rather difficuit to oppose dispute the proposai as it was logical that the riding bound- aries should coincide with that of' the regional area. He said he was concerned and disappointed that Hope Town- ship and Port Hope was taken out of the area and added to Northumberland. He spoke of, ties that have existed for many years between these two centres and to those in the present Durham riding. Mr. Douglas Moffatt, who is the NDP candidate for the nex t provincial election, fîrst commented that he feit he had been scuppered. However, he said that there had been considerable change in north Oshawa in recent years. This portion is being added to be part of the Durham East riding. He said it would be most interesting and feit there could be more support in the north of Oshawa for the NDP than existed in the Port Hope area. WlHITE TO CLAMVP DOWN ON DURHAM SPENDING (Continuedfrom page 1) ized", he said, "and the region has to bring salaries up to a certain level and not have different rates for different municipalities." Mr. Attersley pointed out that the province's transition- ai grants won't equal the extracosts, 50 therefore the o111Y 1way to cut costs is to increase the transitional grants or reduce the services to the outlying areas. *GM increses __ allowance General Motors of Canada has announced an increased cost-of-living allowance for almnost 30,00)0 hourly and sala ried emnployees.
