According to Professor R.W. Irwin of the School of Engineering, Ontario Agri- cultural College, a lot of water is wasted in too frequent waterings that are too short to allow water to see p deeply into the soul. "Frequent watering resuits in shallow rooting and crab- grass. It also causes insuffi- dient water reserves that cannot maintain the turf." The best way to encourage de ep water reserves is to water in the early morning. Lawns require one inch of water per week. This means one hour of watering to saturate 250 square feet of lawn. Professor Irwin recom- mends usuing good quality sprinklers to supply water evenfly. A tin cari should be placed near the sprinkler to de termine when an area bas received adequate water. Newiy-seeded lawns should be watered carefully. "ýNew lawns shouldn't be saturated until the'root sys- tem is estabished. Water juste enough to allow the grass seeds to germinate." For new lawns, high pres- sure sprinklers are best because they produce a fine soray.
