Orono were defeated bv Cobourg Minor On Monday, January 2nd, the Peterborough Bantams were hosted by the Orono club. The boys worked hard and came up with a well deserved win by a score of 5-1. The first period saw just one goal scored, that off the stick 'f Warren Nicholls, with assists to Duane Major and Paul Reed. In the second period Orono added two more, the first scored by Ken Prescott from Alan Webster and then Warren Nicholls tipped in Robbie Tal- sma's pass. Paul Reed opened the scoring in the third from Terry Hedges and Robbie Talsma and then Peterborough got on the scoreboard to end goalie Dan Mitchell's chance for a shut-out. Before the period was over Paul Reed got another, this time from Duane Major and Peter Kruhkert to end the game. The boys travelled to Bowmanville to play Newcastle the next night for an exciting game. Paul Reed opened the scoring in the game on a play with Warren Nichols. Newcastle came back to tie it up before the period ended. Again Paul Reed put the Orono club ahead on a goal with Duane Major. Then Steve Stec blasted one in from the point from Paul Reed to go ahead 3-1. Before the second period was over Newcastle had got another goal to narrow the margin. In the third period Newcastle tied it up and that's the way it finished 3-3. Friday, January 6th, took the boys to The Tenant ruel Atoms travelled to Ops Centre for a tournament on December 26th and 27th. Our first game, (on the 26th) was against Keene. In this game, Keene started out on the scoring. Actually, they scored the first 3 goals of the game, but Orono came back in the 3rd period and scored 2 goals. The first was scored by Greg Vey, and was assisted by Paul Henry. The 2nd was scored by Paul Henry, and assisted by Greg Vey. Keene then came back again and scored 2 more. These goals ended the game 5-2 for Keene, and also put Orono in the consolation round. Our 2nd game was played on the 27th, and was against Peterborough. In this game, the teams alternated their goals. In the first period the visitors started out, but Orono came back and scored 2 goals. Then Robbie Talsma connected on a bounce in front of the net, assisted by Ken Prescott and Duane Major to end the second period. Pete Kruhkert opened the scoring in the third on a unassisted goal effort to put the boys ahead 6-0. They kind of backed off a bit and Peterborough quickly took advantage of this and poked in three goals to end the game Orono 6, Peterborough 3. Monday night's home game brought Uxbridge in for a fast, clean, exciting game. They scored the first goal with just forty seconds into the game. This must have inched goalie Dan Mitchell just a bit, because he played superbly for the rest of the game. Paul Reed got the Orono team on the scoreboard, on-a picture play with Duane Major and Terry Hedges. Uxbridge got the go-ahead goal to end the first period. There was no scoring in the second period and Jim Moffatt tied the game in the third with Paul Reed and Terry Hedges. The game ended 2-2 and with the boys just getting one penalty, it was an exhibition of fine hockey. for the consolation trophy. This trophy was played against Little Britain, and was played very hard by both teams. In the first period, Little Britain scored 2 goals and Orono seemed to be defending their goalie. But, in the 2nd period, it was a different story. Orono scored 2 goals, and Britain did the defending. The 1st goal was scored by Greg Vey, assisted by Paul Henry. The 2nd was also scored by Greg Vey, assisted by Paul Henry. The 3rd period brought on 2 goals for the visitors, but was a well played game all round. This ended the score at 4-2 for Little Britain. The boys returned home dissappointed, but took it well. On December 31st the boys then travelled to Omemee (champs of the previous tournament). In the 1st period Orono scored 2 goals and Omemee 1 goal. The 1st was by Greg Vey, assisted by Paul Henry. The 2nd was by David Little, assisted by Paul Rosseau and Robert French. This was a well deserved goal. In the 2nd period only Orono scored. This goal was by Robert French unassisted. In the 3rd period Omemee scored 5 goals in a row. After all those goals Orono came back and scored 4. The 4th goal was by Greg Vey, unassisted. The 5th goal was shot in by Paul Henry and was assisted by Greg Vey. The 6th goal was scored by Paul Rosseau and assisted by Robert French. The last and winning goal was scored by Stephen Murree, assisted by Greg Vey. This ended the game 7-6 for Orono. This was a well played game and the boys worked hard to come up from behind. An excellent game played by Chris Langford our goalie. Jamboree J Midgets 2-0 in their first game. The Orono boys played well but they could not get their offence going. In their second game Orono lost by a score of 4-3 to Wellington thus eliminating the Orono team from the tournament. John West was the star of the game for Orono scoring two goals and adding an assist. Pat Williams scored the other Orono goal with assists going to Steve Clark with two, David Sunstrum and Paul Reddick adding singles. The regular monthly Jam- boree in the Orono Town Hall this past Sunday, January 8th, was another success with a large number in attend- ance. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon as they experien- ced the many talents of the local entertainers. The artists on the show were Bill Lynde on fiddle, Verna McMahon and John Noonan sang up a storm and Lyle Couch was excellent with comedy routine and on the more serious side his rendition of the Deck of Cards. The Clarke High Country- men were a big hit with the Rejuvenate Poinsettias By now, your Christmas poinsettia will be past its prime. You will have to decide whether to keep it or throw it out. While many will dispose of the plant, there are a few home gardeners who will enjoy the challenge of trying to save it. Burke McNeill, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food extension horticulturist, says that with the proper attention, home gardeners can obtain a glorious display of color next year. After flowering, the plant needs rest in a cool location. The soil should be allowed to dry out and should be kept this way until April. When spring arrives, home gardeners can begin giving the plant light and water. By June, the poinsettia will be ready to be planted in a shady spot in the garden. Mr. McNeill says plants should be returned to the house before the first frost. To make the plant bloom, expose it to light (not artifi- cial) and maintain 18 to 20 degrees C. temperature. Plants for low light areas Many home gardeners fail with houseplants because they do not choose the right type of plant, says R.A. Fleming, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food extens- ion horticulturist. Mr. Fleming says in most cases light is the limiting factor in house plant success. Light is not as easily control- led as moisture and ýtemper- ature. "Flowering plants usually require more light than foliage plants," says Mr. Fleming. Green-leaved foliage plants will grow moderately weli in shaded locations. Some will tolerate quite dark areas of a room while coloured-leaved plants require more light. The closer natural con- ditions can be simulated, the greater the success in grow- ing houseplants. For the beginner, Mr. Fleming recommends plants such as Wandering Jew, Spider Plants, Moses in the Bullrushes, Prayer Plants, Grape Ivy, and Calathea. These plants are easy to grow and will withstand our warm homes and subdued natural light conditions. Home gardeners may want to consider Fluorescent light- ing to grow flowering plants.
