There are various methods of grafting, to name a few there is the bridge grafting, cleft grafting, side grafting and top if graftying. Each one is used ýe for a different purpose. Let's 9 examine the most widely used a form of grafting, the top grafting, whieh is used in the ,e orchard to change the variety t-from one kind to another. This ,e is done in the early part of the ýe spring when the sap is just d starting to run. You remove, Person al Guard Dogs at their Best. To most people a personal guard dog represents much danger. This is widely mis- construed conception of these animais. A properly'trained dog under proper command is a well disciplined, well be- haved fellow. These dogs ispend most of their time at their masters side or in bis home representing a pet that can be handled by ahl people.- A dog who has been given the correct training will attack at a single command of bhis master without warning to bis assailant, but in the same respect the dog will fali back and hold no grudges when bis master cails him off. Not ail shepherds or pin- shers are qualified for being a guard dog. They must have the right disposition and the right upbringing to start with. Sun Valley's Hilton for dogs Ine. has set up a- course modeled to show people the correct way to handie a personal guard dog. The course is designed to broaden the knowledge of people who are interested in this field. t will also show-that the dogs are not trained through pain to hate ail humans that approach them but by a long patient procedure using the utmost of the dog's intelli- gence. the braneb close to the stem, or in the case of small trees you can eut off the whole top about 3 feet above the ground. When you have made the eut you will notice that in the centre of the braneh is the wood whicb is a creme colour, now next to tbe wood there is a green layer ealled the cambian layer, and this is the part where the sap flows, through. Now take some small twigs from the tree you want to reproduce, and cut them to about 6 to 8 inches then 'at the bottom of this branch make a wedge shaped cut on the braneh, then eut a groove in the stem or branch where you are going to graft on, and insert the braneb, which we caîl a scion in the trade, in tbis groove so that the two cambian (green part) layers meet. the one from the scion and the one from the stem. Then take a string or elastie and firmly secure the scion s0 that it will not move, then cover with a tree sealant, such as braco. Bridge grafting is used again in the orehard or at home, especially when the mice have girldled the tree in the winter and bas eaten away the cambian layer, in which case the tree will die unles some way the sap can bypass this damaged area, in which case we use the bridge grafting method. The name already implies bridge- grafting. We take the branch, whieh is long enougb to bypass the damaged area, usually about 12 to 15 incbes, and cut this from the last year's growtb of the tree, then scrape away the outside layer of the t ree, below the damag- ed area until you bit the cambian layer. Then eut the branch seion on a slant and fasten thîs overtop the cam- bian layer of the tree and then repeat the same at the top of the damaged area. To fasten this scion,. you can use a string or if the scion is beavy enough you ean put a nail through the selon, fastening it to'tbe wood of the tree, then cover the wounded-areas witb braco or a tree healant, 50 they won't dry dut, or so the inseets will not go into the crack left by the cuts. Bud grafting is the most commonly used metbod of ehanging the variety of a plant. A good example is the rose bush, which are practie- ally ail bud grafted. We start off witb a seedling under- stock, and then in *July and August will take a bud from the variety we want to graft unto the seedling, and insert this on the seedling. We make a eut like a T and open up the cambian layer. Then we eut off a bud from the graf t wood, and insert this in the T eut and tie the bud in tightly. The bud will start-to grow and the new plant bas started. -More next week. Until then, happy gardening.
