DURHAM AGRI-NEWS Top-producing herds given honours The Durhami County Dairy Herd Improvement Associat- ion ield their annual noon luncireon and meeting on Tuesday, April 4th at thre Orono United Church. More than 80Dairy producers, their herds in the Dairy Herd Improvement Association for 1977 were announced. For the second year in a row, Peter Hoogeveen of Blackstock was the top pro- duction herd in the Supervis- ed Program of the D.H.I.A. provincial program. Peter had a composite B.C.A. average of 159 points on 39 cows. In second place was Peter Sikmna of R.R. 3, Newcastle with a composite B.C.A. of 150. Mr. Norm Irvine of Ceredale Fertiliz- ers was on hand te present the Ceresdale Fertilizer Ltd. awýard to Peter for his fine efforts during the past year. Bob Sisson, the Dairy Herd Improvement Superviser for the area, aisô pointed out that Peter is ranked in the top ten provincially on the Super- vised Program of D.H.I.A. and ,congratulations were ex- tended te him on behaîf of everyone present. Winner of the Advanced Farming Sys- tem's trophy presented by Mr. Jim Tamblyn of Orono for the most improved herd on the Supervised Program went-te Harold Ransberry of R.R. 1, Orono. The Shur-Gain Feeds Trophy awarded by Shur-Gain and Mr. Deug Sleep, area sales represent- ative for the company and presented te the top owner sampler herd each year was won by Mr. John Bandstra of R.R. 1, Hampton. John had a composite B.C.A. of 129.5 on 37 cows. In second place was Lloyd and Dave Kellogg of R.R. 1, Port Hope for the composite B.C.A. of 128. The Durham Farmers Co-op Award for the most irnproved Owner Sampler Herd went to Vaughan McGîll of R.R. 2, Janetville. Mr. John Pogue on behalf of The Toronto-Domin- ion Bank in Bowmanvîlle presented the Bank award to Mr. Don Vandermeer of R.R. 2, Oshawa for the herd with the best calving intervals during the past year. Our congratulations go ont to all of these producers and to everyone else -who, is involved in a production testing program in their dairy operation because, through the effective use of Perform- ance Testingc and knowing what your cows are doing in your herd, yüu can strîve to make productive improve- ments in your herd, each and everv vear.
