Tel.: 57"-800 Van Belle on The question of ten asked is, when do 1 start my lawn, in the spring or the faîl. The best time would be wben nature provides the proper weather conditions wbîch in the Dur- ham region is the fal and the spring. By fail, I mean late August and the first 3 weeks of September, usually the temperature becomes more moderate and drops down at nigbt, and we usually have a fair amount of rain and also dew at this time of year, s0 the best time would be in late August. This will give the seed a chance to become established before the first frost when t he grass plants go into their winter dormant period. Preparation. The lawn whicb yau will enjoy for years to come will depend on the preparation you make at this time. The most important is the soul you have to work with. If it is subsoil that bas been duo out of the basement or if it is clay it wil prabably be well worth it to bring in fresh soil and spread a good thick layer aver top of this subsoil. This sbould be at least 5 to 6 inches deep. Be sure ta buy good topsoil, pay a littie extraand get the best, it will save you time and maney later.- One beef I have with some of the large builders is that in new subdivision, the top soil is completely removed and sold, and wben the home is built, a v ery thin layer of soil is put back on and the grass or lawn xill have no chance to get properly started. Most soils that are sald today have weed seeds in the soil, sa try ta have the sou dcean before seeding. Tbis can be done in two ways, by worling the soil wîth a rotatiller 2 or 3 times with a week in between. This will giv the weed seeds a chance ta germinate and then the tiller will loosen up thesoil again, giving the seed no chance ta become establisbed. The other way ta contraI the weeds is ta spray the area wîth a weed killer that only kills off the top grawth, and will not barm thé grass seeds or stop the germination. In somne cases it may be impossible ta bring in new top soul, because the area is too large, then you sbauld try ta brmng in same humus into the sail sucb as peatmoss, man- ure etc. In clay souls use same very course sand and thor- oughly mix this with a tiller, Tbis will areate the soil and will gîve the grass plants the valuable air required for proper grawth. A well drained lawn is necessary for praper growtb, surface drainage can be provided by proper grading, and always grade away frorm the bouse so that no water can get into the basemnent of the bouse. Sometimes it may be necessary ta instaîl drainage tiles under the ground ta drain the excessive water away. Always make sure that tbere are no depressions in the lawn, since water will lay there and the grasses will be winter killed Lawn Seed Gardening cheaper the seed tbe courser the lawn will be. sa when 983-9167 purchasing lawn seed neyer red fescue and a nursing try to get a bargain because grass. The best way to buy yau lose in the long run. Most lawnseed is to go to your local lawn mixture should have at seed bouse, garden centre or least 40 per cent Bluegrasses hardware store, who will andwill have some creeping know the best for your area.
