6-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 13th, 1978 Kendal News Saturday, September 9th was a perfect day for Orono Fair. We enjayed watching the four horse teams and the drivers and carniages drawn by the hackney horses. The riding too wvas superb. There w'as more poultry than ever before and even baby chicks with twvo bantam hens, one sitting on the mother's back. The goats and littie kids are quite an attraction. There were cattie of many breeds. The charolais cows are very large and so are their calves. We took in part of the Scottish Variety Show headed by Billy Mleek with songs by Peter Glen. One of those we enjoyed meeting was Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wannan of Toronto. There were seven children in the Wannan famiiy and they lived west of'Harper Carscad- den's. Their farm is now part of the Provincial Park. They ail attended Kendal School. Marjorie and Lorne became tachers. Lorne taught at Kirby but he was too ill to come to their centennial two weeks ago. The directors deserve a great deal of credit for putting on such a fine show the best ever. Sunday morming was very fine and we were pleased to have the children and their parents back to Sunday School with some new ones. Let us have more children next Sunday. Rev. A. Tizzard announced Kendal Anniver- sary on October 22nd with Dr. Frank Fiddier, a retired United Cburch missionary as guest speaker. On Wednesday, September 6th a bus load of people left Kendai, Newtonville and Newcastle for Participation House in Markham first. There we observed the won- derful work being carried on- by the staff of that fine institution for those severely crippled, paralyzed and han- dicapped people. Then we travelled on to Black Creek Pioneer 'Village. Black Creek' is a tibutary of the Humber River. The village is just south of Steeles Avenue on Black Creek. Af ter lunch we had just began our waik down Queen Street of Pioneer Village when 1 saw a big sign entitled, Laskay Emporium, Groceries, Dry Goods, Hard- ware, Ciothing, Paints, Oil, Boots and Shoes.
