We now go on to play Omemee in a best 2 out of 3 to determine who goes on to play the E division winner in On Monday, Feb. 15th. the Matthews and Hill Ins. O.M.H.A. Peewees played host to Minden and came away with a 5-2 victory. The first period saw lots of end to end action with both goaltenders coming up with the big plays to end the period 0-0. In the second period the local boys struck for two unanswered goals to go ahead 2-0. Scoring for Orono Stuart Irwin unassisted, then Kevin our area. The week started with a trip to Bobcaygeon on Feb, 16th. for a close encounter of the first kind as we eked out a 3-2 win. Ted Gaudet scoring the winner from Todd Thertell with 1 second left on the clock. Both teams got off to a slow start in this one and it wasn't until the second period that we got rolling pouring 17 shots at the Bob- caygeon goalie who played a great game for the opposition as he turned them all away. Finally, at the 10:22 mark of the third period Brian Good- win broke the scoreless tie with help from Ted Gaudet then less than a minute later Ted scored himself from Tim Bailey giving Orono a 2-0 lead. Then Bobcaygeon stole a page from our book as they mounted a comeback scoring two goals the tying one com- ing with 1:03 left on the clock. That set the stage for a comeback of our won which ended with Ted's second goal as the last second was about to tick off the clock. We cer- tainly were deserving of the victory having out shot them 43 to 8. On Saturday, Feb. 20th. and Sunday, Feb. 21st. we hooked up with Minden in a home and home series blasting them 7 to 1 in Orono and 9 to 4 in Minden. At home we started off with three goals in the first period and never looked back. Brian Goodwin from Jamie Shmyr opened the scoring at the 4:21 marked followed by Laurens Kaldeway from Jason Bur- nham and Doug Bedford and Brian Rodd from Ted Gaudet and Todd Gray. Minden kept us off the score sheet in the second period despite being badly out played and netted a goal of their own. In the third period the flood gates opened and we poured in 4 unanswered goals. The Orono marksmen were Laurens Kaldeway from Todd Hutton and Tim Bailey, Ted Gaudet with two, the first assisted by Brian Goodwin and Doug Bedford, then Brian helping out again on the second goal, and Todd Hutton from Jason Burnham and Laurens Kaldeway. The game in Minden had a little more drama to it as we got off to our patented slow start against opposition we think we can be at and allow- ed Minden to take a 3-0 lead. However, another trademark our team has this Hartwig assisted by Derek Anderson. The third period saw both teams open up and play wide open Hockey and little em- phasis on defence and seeing the local boys outscore the opposition 3-2 to wind up with a 5-2 victory. Scoring the Orono goals were: Kevin Hartwig unassisted, Brad Roberts assisted by Shawn Bailey and Russell Sullivan, David Bailey with Assists go- ing to Scott McCullough and year is never say die attitude and our ability to bounce back. This was never more evident than in this game as with 3:58 left in the lst. period the comeback began starting with Todd Hutton from Laurens Kaldeway and Brian Rodd. Todd's goal was followed by one from Brian Goodwin assisted by Todd Thertell. With 1 second left in the 1st. period Ted Gaudet tied the score with help from Anthony Webb and Jason Burnham. In the second period we took the lead for the lst. time as Laurens Kaldeway scored from Tim Bailey. Minden was not about to throw in the towel just yet as they came back to tie the game 4 to 4 with 2:49 left in the period. However, less than 30 seconds later Brian Rodd gave Orono the lead once and for all with an unassisted effort. The third period belonged to Orono as we completely dominated Minden blasting home four unanswered goals for a 9-4 victory. The scoring went as follows: Todd Thertell frorn Brain Goodwin, Blaine Souch from Brian Goodwin, Todd Hutton from Brian Rodd and Anthony Webb from Ted Gaudet. On Monday, Feb. 22nd. we travelled to Omemee to close out the round-robin playoff needing a victory or so we thought, to continue on the playoffs. As it turned out the outcome of the game was meaning less and we will play the Omemee team in a playoff. I am glad the team didn't know the game was meaning less before the game started as we seem to play our best hockey with our backs to the wall. As a resuit the fans were treated to a thrilling game that ended in a 1-1 tie. Brian Goodwin scoring another key goal at the 9:43 mark of the third period knotted the score after Omemee has taken a 1-0 lead in the second period. The whole team came up with a super effort in this game but there is one guy who deserves special mention and that is our goalie Mike Good- murphy. Mike was nothing short of spectacular in this game as he turned away 24 shots and frustrated the Omemee shooters time and time again. Keep up the good work guys and we are going to need much of the same as we continue on. 8, Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 24, 1982 c Patrick voods.
