Buliling down in Town of Newcastle The issuance of building permits both for construction and demolition in the Town of Newcastle is down the flrst three months of 1982 com- pared to that in 1981. A total of 31 permits were issued during the first three months in 1982 compared to 52 in 1981. The Town has issued one permit for single family dwelling in the urban areas and three i agricultural zones for a total of four per- mits for new dweLlings. This compared with 12 in the saine period last year. Construction in the Town is as was expected earlier this year when the budget was comipleted. Mayor Rickard at Mon- day's committee meeting pointed out the drop in building starts and question- ed the work load for the two building inspectors. Mr. Black was introduced by Gordon Wick and brought a very imformative talk on how the "Cullen Gardens", got started. Mr. Cullen purchased pro- perty around Whitby about 20 years ago and every year has added to the already col- ourful and interesting display, already famous to this area. Mr. Cullen is a devoted Christian Inyman for his Church and so devoutly interested in beatuifying Gods world. A brand new restaurant and Convention Centre is planned for next year, to accommodate up to 5(X0 peopie. -The restival of Colours" featuring tulips, spring plantings will be on from April 15th - May 15 followed by the "Festival of Roses," in June. Presentations were made to the two retiring members: Mrs. Anne Evans and Mis. 1. Challice, both from the Orono Society. A District Service award was made to Mrs. Hîilda Le Masurier, R. R. No. 1, Cann- ington, for her long years of service to horticulture. Due to illness, she was unable to be present to accept her award. Mrs. Lynn Harrison placed 3rd in floral design and Mrs. Lorna Atkins an honourable mention for African violets. Mrs. Harrison placed lst in floral design.
