Crops Update: I would like to mention a couple of areas related to crop production where we have been getting a number of questions,~ A number of farmers have indicated to uis that they are going to use their own seed this year, rather than buying Certified Seed. We hope you have run a germination test on this seed, and if not, we wouid strongiy urge you to do 'so. Place a inumber of seeds in a dish or flat of mnoist soil and maintain the soil at a cool temperature. Check the number of ger- minated seeds and plant ac- cording to percentage ger- mination. The other area on which we have hiad a lot of requests is that of atrazine and residues and what crops --an, or can 't, be grown. The amnounts ot'atrazine in the soul, or course, determine the crop to be grown. If,, atrazine has been used one or more years, then, you may have a residue problem depending on how much was applied. Tests on soul can be done at the Pesticide Residue Lab at the University of Guelph, however, these are slow in coming back. A more prac- tical solution at this tirne of year is to run your own Check. Select soil samples from, various areas of any field, mix them up and make one composite sample. Place the sample or samples in a warm place in the house (window sili, etc.),ý and plant the crop you wish to grow. Most crops will emerge, grow rapidly and then turn Yeliow and die, if atrazine residue is too high. Remember rto take represen- tatïNýe sampies as headlands and low areas will have more than their share of buildup. Soul type, rainfaîl and number of years of applica- tion are other factors which affect carry-over. Gen erally speaking, for most field crops, you can ex- pect residue problems if more than I ½l1bs. of active ingre- dient was applied the previous year. For crops such as oats and white beans, it ma y be less. ture above shows but a few on the Wilrnot at Highway No. 2.
