In a report to Monday's meeting Ron Dupuis, Director of Public Works, indicated that the C.R.T.C. expects a signal to the Orono Estates by June 1st, 1984. Well, I had the opportunity to do just that. For the past three mon- ths I have been in Quebec on a student exchange. 1, along with two other students from Clarke High School returned home a week ago last Friday and were received warmly by family and friends. There also appears some interest in the now vacant Barlow Furniture Store and it is quite possible to see some new venture taking hold at this location in the downtown area of Orono. For those of you who aren't familiar with the linguistic exchange, I will ex- plain. Each person wishing to participate in the exchange was required to complete a report on themselves. With the information gathered from these reports, students in Ontario were matched with students from Quebec. The Quebec students live in On- tario from September to December and the students from Ontario spent February to April in Quebec. My exchange partner's name was Annie St. Ger- main. We were to spend six months of our lives together but I knew relatively nothing about her and the first time I saw her was the day she step- ped off the bus, a little ner- vous about starting her three month exchange. She spoke very little English and my French was almost non- existent. Before that time I had never realized the impor- tance of communication, but that day, and in the months that followed, I learned. I'm happy to say that when Annie returned to Quebec she was almost bilingual and I had made a very good friend. On February 2nd, Angela Malik, Jim Brown and 1, left family and friends and began the second half of the ex- change. That night we spent in a hotel in Toronto with about 150 exchange students from across Ontario. The bus trip to and from Quebec, hotel accommodations and meals were paid for, corn- pliments of the government.
