The occasion marked the recognition by the Town afittheir apprecia- lion ta those whio have played major parts in the actîvities and development of the com-munity. Eleven citizenis were honourecl with Citizen ai the Year Awards marking the past eleven years since the inception of the Town ai Newcastle under a regional system oi govern- mient. The Town also paid tribute ta those in the community who have been hionouired with Biçenten- niiaI Medals by the Pro- vince ai Ontariao wo ,ere, i nt rodutced b y S amn Cuireatz fromi the au- dienice. Fuirther the Town gavec recaginiian ta saine fifty- ane citizenis wbo were nominees for the Town of Newcastle Citizens ai tbe Year awards and from Whicb list the final eleven were chosen by council. Mvayor Rickard spoke ai the contribution these citizens have played in the comimunity and said al nomninees were equially deservinig of the TownI award. COuLn lC S. MIayvor Rickard presented the eleven'reci- pients eacb with a Bicentennial-lOth anniver- sary pure silver coin along with a book, "Loyal She Remnains", a pictorial history ai Ontario puiblished by the United Empire Loyalist's Association of Canada. The occasion was a meaningful one and the Town bias received many fine compliments in the presentation. S Following, the ceremonies a light lunch was available. The -eleven ,recipients were: Mrs. Louise Aasen Dedication ta the com- munity through programs and activities ai the Jaycetles, the Block Parent Association, an ex- ecutîve member ai the Carholic Parent Teachers Association, a member ai the Town ai Newcastle Public Library and as ,vell active with programs with the Social Planning Comn- mittee. Mr. Alfred Brown Alf has been a membher ai the St. John Amn- bulance for- 21 years and tbrougb the association bas given service ta the community and especially, Youth groups in teacbing first aid. He lias been ad- mitted into the "Order of St. John". He is president ai tbe Bowmanville Hor- ticultural Society and ac- tive ini tbe Men's Club and Community Care pro- gram. Mrs. Beatrice Brown M%,rs. Brown bas been active in and instrumental in farming a Parent Group for the Handicap- ped Cbildren in the Osbawa area wbicb bas lead to tbe formation. of the Sîmcoe Hall Treat- ment Centre. She bas sbown and continues to show a great interest in the special needs of tbe ban- dica pped and bas spearbeaded many fund rai sing evenîs for the cause. Mr. Millon Dakin Througb the Canadian Foresýters Milt Dakin was mosl instrumental in the developmenl and plans and the construction of' the non-profit housing project ini Bowmanville, Forestree Place' which was officially opened in Septlember af 1983. His interest in tbe pro- ject dates back ta 1976. Mr. Charles Gray Charles Gray, formerly af Orono, headed up the fund raising committee for the Orono Arena and Comnmunity Centre. He has been involved with the Great Pineridge Kinsmen Club and St. Saviaur 's 'Anglican Cburch were he bas been a driving farce throughout the years. H-e bas served on the ex-- ecutive of the Orono, Skating Club, is secretary for the Newcastle and District Chamber of Com- merce and bas been chief organizer for at least two Wintario events in tbe Town. He also is a work- ing supporter aif tbe Festival Sinrige rs oaf Oshawa. Mr. Edward Maier Ed. a resident ai Newcastle, bas a disî inguished record as a member ai the armied farces and since caming ta Canada bas been anr active member ai the Royal Canadian Legion. He bas been invalved witb every praject ai the Newcastle Lions Club and beaded up tlie committee for tbre Newcastle arena. His kindness bas been felt througbout the cammuni- ty and bis cammunity work is always evident. Mrs. Bonnie Reid The cammunity has benefited in mnany ways tbrougb the \voluniteer work provided by M]rs. Reid, scoutingý,lber cburcb, ber cbildren's schoo)ls, tbe Durbiam nci tral Agr-icultural Fair and tbe Newcast le Community Care prog-ram. Bannie ba.s assisted in miany ways with her voluntcer wark being president af the Orona U.C.W., and warked ta reactivate the Sunday School in Kirby. Her assistance bas always been readily given in miany facets of community live. Miss Silvia Ruegger Silvia who attended public school in Newton- ville has always shown determination and dedica- tion as exemplified in the Olympic Gjames this sumn- mer in Los Angeles where she extended herseif toa remarkable finish in the Ladies long distance run, competition. A fitting reci--- ient of the Town 's award f'or this accomplish- ment alane.
