Mowat states the action of the Conservative governmnent is not unlike that broughit in- to force when Reagan was first elected to office as Presi- dent of the United States. He said the Conservatives like Reagan basfelt the organiza- tion is a nuisance. Mowat does point out that public reaction bas caused thie government to reinstate the GulI programn but cautions this may be only for a short period of time and if it is to continue (the program) public pressure must con- tinue. EXPECTS RETURN 0F TRAIN SScott Fennell, M.P.P. On- tario riding, expects the cancelled rail service between Havelock and Toronto to be reinstated by -the Conser- vative government sometime in the faIt of 1985. Fennell said there would be little startup costs as the fine is there and the equipment bas long been paid for. FIRST NEW YEAR BABY BORN IN UXBRIDGE The first New Year baby in the Region of Durham was born to Judy Gunn-Saunders and Gary Saunders at 2:44 a.m. January lst at the Cot- tage Hospital ni Uxbridge. HOLLP LEVEE IN NEWCASTLE HALL Allan Lawrence, M.P. for Durham-Northumberland and bis wife Moira entertain- ed at a New Year's levee in Newcastle Town Hall on December 3th. TAX FREEZE UNREALISTIC Gary Herrema, chairman of the Region of Durham, bas stated that a proposed t ax freeze made by one member of council is unrealistic. He said cuts would have to be (Continueçl page 7) Silvia on track 'ywi"th Marathon Win Silvia Ruegger, the 23 year old Newtonville long distance runner, flot only Set a new Canadian record timne of 2:28:36 but was the ladies winner of a marathon held in Houston, Texas over the weekend. Silvia won $20,O0W and a $l00,O00 insurance policy on winning- the women's division of the Houston Tenneco, Marathon. The win is most noteable as it is only the third such contest she has entered in thIle lonrig -d istanc e marathon. She crossed the finish fine ahead of Mlontreal runner Jacqueline Gareau who placed second in the event. Ruegger lauinchied her win- ning kick at the 22-mile mark pulling away from the Mon- treal runner. Silvia who started running whiie going to thie Newton- ville Public School and then following in running a' Clarke High School oiinaN.-, ly speccialized in the 1500 and 3000 metre runis as well as taking part in cross countr-y runs, rin January of 1984 Silvia switched to the long distance run and last May through winning the National Capital Marathon won a place to comipete in the Olympics for Canada wýhich wvas hetd in Los Angeles. At the Olymipics she turnied in a remarkable run placinig eighth in world competition and set a Canadian best record of 2:29:09. Silvia was recognized late in 1983 as one of the eleven Citizens of the Year award winners by the Town of Newcastle. Congratulations are cer- tainly in order for Silvia in her accomplishments.
