Newcastle shuts-out Orono Tri-County Atoms On Friday, Feb. 1, Orono Tri-county Atoms hosted Newcastle in an exhibition grudge match. Newcastle beat Orono in the Grafton tournament 4-3 in sudden death, Orono wanted desperately to meet Newcas- tle again. The score certainly doesn't show that. Newcastle cleaned our dock by a disasterous slaughter of,9-0! Newcastle came, out skating and playing with a merciless power. They sheil shocked poor John Buttigieg with four goals in the first period. John did make some good saves, but a goalie is on- ly one player. We need some defense. Thereonly seemned to be two players awake dur- ing this slaughter, that was Mike Doty on defe nse and J.P. Tousignant. The rest of the team didn't seem to know wher e to stumble next. No one seemed to be playing their positions or with any kind of enthusiasm for the gamne they ail love. 1 hope the attitude of these young players soon picks up or l'm afraid they may lose their fans and cheering section. ORONO 3 - OSHAWA BRUINS 1 On Thursday, January 24, Orono hosted the Oshawa Bruins and sent them home to a 3-1 defeat. The Matthews and Hill boys were really up for this exhibition game and drew I st blood just 3 minutes and il seconds into the Ist period: David Sheridan parked himself in front of the net screening the Oshawa goalie. Jason Burnham fired a low wrist shot which David Sheridan deflected into the net. This is a play the Orono coaches have been working on in practice and the boys a re using it to their advantage lately. Jason Burnham put Orono up 2-0 late into the period when he tipped in David's pass from the corner. David started the play when he stripped the puck from a defenceman and spot.- ted Jason who turned on the jets and bore into the siot area. The second period went scoreless with Shawn- Hardy and Billy Todd -who shared the goaltending coming up with some big saves. Oshawa opened the 3rd period with a goal of their own to make it a 2-1 encouniter. Orono outplayed their opponents but were unable to score until the .44 mark when Oshawa lifted their goals for an extra attack er. David Sheridan pulled bis second goal of the game when he fired the puck the iength of the ice into the open net. Todd '"Chipmunk" Gray and Jason Major did the spade work to set Davie Up. Mike Goodmurphy was steady on defence with Brian Rodd and Jason Adey play- ing strong games for the home team. OSHAWA BRIUNS 3 ORONO 2 On Saturday, the Bruins returned for a rernatcri and got their revenge with a 3-2 win. It was a case of Oshawa playing a solid 2 way game and Orono playing absolutely terrible. Orono played so bad that each player had to pay up Io cents a piece as punish- ment and buy the coaches a coffee for losing. 1h hadn't been for some' headsup goaltending by Billy Todd and Shawn Hardy it would have been 10-2. The visitors dominated the play in the lst period with 2 unanswered goals. The se- cond stanza went scoreless. David Sheridan closed the gap to 2-i when he received a beautiful pass from BMaine Souch and tipped it under a sprawling goalie. Oshawa wasted no time and 15 seconds later popped one in to make it 3-1 Oshawa. Jeff "Granny" Hartwig made it a close match when he received a picture pass from Jason Burnham and skated ninunmolested. Jeff made no mistakes cat- ching the top corner glove side with a hard wrist shot. Mike Goodmurphy earned the assist when he stole the puck and relayed it up to Jason. The boys didn't have to be told they played poorly, they knew it. BEWDLEY 4 - ORONO 2 On Tuesday, Jan. 29, Orono dropped a 4-2 decision to the visiting Bewdley team. 1The Matthews and Hill boys put up a great struggle but just couldn't hold the visitors off in the 3rd period. This was a typical playoff game which featured tough checking and goaltending. Bewdley drew Ist blood early in the 2nd period. Orono tied it up just seconds later when Blaine Souch stole the puckat centre, stickhandl- ed poast the defenceman and slid the puck under the Bewdley goalie. Bewdley fouglht back and made it 2-Ito close out the period. Jason Adey opened the 3rd stanza when he receiv- ed a nice pass fromn Blaine Souch and Jeff Hartwig and fired in a hard low screen shot which found the mark. Orono fired up and put on great pressure but just couldn't get the go ahead marker. In the dying minutes, Bewdley notched 2 quick ones to seal away to victory. SAVANNAH4 HOMES & GARDENS 8 Day ...
