So was the issue of a booklet of ten 34-cent stamps in the historic forts seies on June 28. The stamps had been printed in advance in the new first-class domestîc denomination of 34 cents, the rate sought several months earlier by Canada Post Corp. The new rate was to take effect M onday, June 24, but first had to be approved by the federal cabinet. .There was speculation the postal increases might flot be approved, but on Thursday, June 20, Cabi- net flashed the green light. The next day, a pre- viously unannounced defi- nitive was issued, a 34- center in full color showing the Parliament buildings from an unusual angle, from the rear, showingalso the parliamentary library. On Friday, June 21, a$2 defmnitive (Scott 936) show- ing Banff National Park was issued, but that issue was neyer in doubt because the denomination was flot affected by the rate in- creases. F-he forts issue continues the series started in 1983. 1-his year's issue presents more failiar fare than the prevîous issue. One of the new issue shows Fort Garry (Winni- peg) as it would have appeared in its original configuration. The gate of Fort Garry was shown on a 20-center issued june 15, 1938 (Scott 243) as part of the long series to mark the visit to Canada of' King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939. Queen Elizabeth was honored on two Canadian stamps when she was queen: a 3-center (Scott 237) is- sued May 10, 1937, and on another 3-center (Scott 248) îssued May 15, 1939. Some of the forts shown are easily accessible to the public, but flot visited as often as they might be. One such is only a short drive from Montreal, lt's Fort Lennox, on Ile-aux- Noix, 50 km southeast of the city. lt's near a major tourist route to Vermont from Quebec, yet is rela- tively unknown. It was an important factor during the War of 1812, persuad- ing U.S. invaders it would be foolhardy to attempt to attack Montreal al5ong the route of the Richelieu River. Jnstead, the Americans came Up a line of the Chateauguay River, where they were defeated by a greatly outnumbered force under the command of Col. Charles-Michel d'lrumberry de Salaberry, honored on a 17-center issued May 11, 1979 (Scott 819). One much-visited fort is included in this issue: Fort York. Fort York tod ay is a major tourist attraction located in downtown To- ronto, near the Cana- dian National Exhibition Grounds. It wý,as built dur- ing the threat of the War of 1812 (the stamp shows it circa 1816). Today a Mili- tia unit, the Queen's York Rangers, is located there. T he regimient traces- its history back to service fo Britain during the Amerî- cani War of Indepenfdence. Other forts pîctured on the stamps are Fort Anne' at Annapolis Royal, N.S., about 200 km west of Halifax; York Redoubt, only 6 km from downtown Halifax; Castie Hill, a sniall fort at Placentia Bay, about 120 km southwest of St. John's, Newfoundland; Fort Frederick, located within the grounds of Ro- yal Military College, King- ston, Ont.; Fort Erie, after which an Ontario comn- munity was named; Fort Walsh, located iust off the Trans-Canada Hiîghway south of Maple Creek, Sask.; and Fort Whoop- Up (don't you love the name) on the outskirts of Lethbridge, Alta. The camps are flot sold separately. lt's a book of 10 for $3.40. The stamps were designed, by Roif Harder of Mon- treal, a graphic artist. LETTERS Letters are invited.
