B-uildîig your child's self esteeem important The fostering of self worth is a central challenge for parents and adults working with children. A child who feels content with hîmself is more likely to enjoy new challenges and, therefore, is more likely to be successful. "No m-atter that they come in small packages; children touch off large-sized emotions in us. Joy, sureness and delîght intermingle with worry, guilt and doubt. Fatigue and frust ration come along in good measure. You brave dawdl- ing and messes and torrents of "No", and the next day it's pin- ching and tattling and who gets the phone. New sets of problems-they change but neyer end. There's no turning back. Regardless, you strive to do your best. AIl along the way you- invest heavily in caring, time, energy, and money. You spare no effort-proper food and clothes, attractive toys, the right medîcal care, and a cons- tant "taxi circuit" to provide every advantage... In spite of good intentions and heartfelt efforts, ho wever, some of you find your youngster not turning out as you would like. He is underachieving, emotionally im- mature, rebellious or unduly wthdrawn. Maybe he goes around with youngsters who are up to no good. "How can Imy child be hav- îng problems when I've done 50 much and tried so hard?" Is a ques- tion bedeviling many a well- intentioned parent." This _quote is from a book called "Your Child's Self Esteem" by Dorothy Corkville Briggs which will form the basis for an 8 session study group for parents being offered by the Family Education Resource Centre of Durham House. The group wilI meet on Tuesday even- ings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. starting February 6 at Sir Albert Love School in Oshawa. The cost is $36.00 per person. Our gardens were a back yard, but the flowers still used to grow. The school was around the corner, and the bell was rung at nine, And -we would run, oh so fast, to get into the line. The teachers were strict, and oh s0 severe, haîf the time we were full of fear. To talk in class, was, a sin, but who got caught, yes, me and Lynne. When school was over, out to play, that was really the best part of the day. Rounders, skipping, bide and seek, even îeap frog, we would play al week. The policeman walking on his beat, to keep us sa fe on our little street. A day at the-seaside, was the event of the year, The train was full of laughter and cheer. A dip in the sea, a stick of rock, how we wished'we could stop that dlock. Take home some seaweed to our mum, to forecast the weather, rain or sun. We look back now, over the years, and wonder why we had those fears? We didn't know what life's about, but ail too soon, we would find out. And now that we are O.A.P.'s How do we treasure those memories.
