12-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 17, 1990 Bill Braham his Ontario We usually get around the Six Nations Reserve nea r Brantford a couple of times a year. And we often drop in to renew acquaintance with Steve Smith and his wife Leigh. They have a place called -Talk- ing Earth Pottery" on Sourspring Road which runs through the reserve. They work in a snug log cabin set back a few hundred yards fromt the road. When we were there recently, sumbeamns were streaming through the small windows. They bounced back from pieces of pottery set on shelves around the room. Beautiful POttery with the "smokey" look that characterized the work of the Mohawks centuries ago. Pottery with turtles, bears and butterflies painted with loving artistry on the bowls, vases and plates. The figures are al symbolic. The Sm-iths have neyer veered from their traditional beliefs. They retain a keen. awareness of the order of nature. 1 becamne absorbed in a bowl shapped like a turtle. It was divided into four parts representing health, life, growth and fertility. To the In- dian, the turtle symbolizes the North Amnerican continent. You could spend years studying the mythology. Indians cail it "spiritually". Many still live it, as do Steve and Leigh. We first meet the Smiths in the late '70s. At that time, Steve was doing odd jobs and Leigh was driv- ing a school bus. They worked on the pottery when they had some spare time. They had become devoted to the craft but couldn't make a living at it. At one point, they just about gaveup. But they found #rhey couldn't. They experimented. They worked up to 16 hours a day on it. Gradually they found the germ of what they were looking for. Gradually they developed the craft into an art. People heard about them and began to seek out their cabin. Today, the walls of the cabin are lined with pictures of world-famous people being presented with "Talk- ing Earth" pottery - presents from the government as something truly representative of Canada's orgins. As usual,, we..stayed longer than expected at the Smiths. We neyer want to say goodbye. As we finally headed back to highway 401, we were grateful for the few hours of quiet serenity we always sense when we visit "Talking Earth'".
