4.Orono Weekly Timnes, Wednesday, January 17, 1990 SPOARTS Orono J&M Custom Framing Tykes On Saturday, January 13, 1990 Orono played host to Shoppers Drug Mart from Bowmanville. Orono Novice notch two wins to their favor Down the 401 east to Baltimore on January 9th went the Orono U.C.H.L. Novice. Orono was ex- pecting a close, tight game and this is what it proved to be. The first five minutes of play saw end to end action, with both goaltenders playing well. At 9:10 of the first Steve Foster stole the puck at centre ice, turned on the speed and scored on the Baltimore goalie. Five minutes later Orono added a second goal scored by Murphy Ir- vine assisted by Bobby Witheridge on a nice two way passing play. With two minutes left in the period Baltimore put one by Orono's net minder Ryan Schoep, end of the first 2-1 Orono. As I said earlier we expected a close game and the second period proved it would be. For thirteen minutes both teams worked hard with the goaltenders being called on to stop many shots. Not until there was only two minutes to play in the second did Orono's Bobby Witheridge score to make the goal light flash, assisted by Jeremy Pare. They changed lines and dropped the puck Orono once again headed for the Baltimore goal. Jamie Richter laid a nice pass on Steve Foster's stick with Steve finishing the play by putting the puck in the net. At the start of the third the scoreboard read 4-1 for Orono. Baltimore found Orono's net and Ryan Schoep stopped two shots before they got one by him. Orono's Mike Morrison picked up the puck and went in on the Baltimore goalie on a break away and promptly made the fans cheer by putting one in. Once again another line change and once again another goal, as Andrew Reid and Murphy Irvine combined talents to have Orono's Andrew Reid score. Baltimore got one back but that was all they could muster. The final score Orono 6, Baltimore 3. The Orono arena played host to a U.C.H.L. game between Orono and our friends and rivals to the south Newcastle on January 12th. Well Orono had 14 players dress- ed for the game, Newcastle had on- ly eight players. But someone forgot to tell the Newcastle players they were skating twice as much and therefore should be tired. Orono got on the board at 14:12 of the first with Steve Foster scoring on a break away. Four minutes later Newcas- tle's C. Davis scored unassisted. Two minutes later Newcastle's K. Kennedy scored assisted by C. Davis on Orono's net minder Ryan Schoep. One minute later Steve Foster beat the Newcastle's net man J. Gutherie. Assisting on Steve's goal was Jonas Bonnetta. With only 45 seconds left in the second Newcastle's N. Stacey threaded the needle putting one by Ryan Schoep. Orono got three goals in a well played second period. Both teams played a close checking period of hockey but on this night the puck was bouncing Orono's way. Scoring for Orono was Andrew Reid from Murphy Irvine, second goal scored by Jamie Richter on a break away, third goal scored by Bobby Witheridge assisted by Steve Foster. When your hot your hot and that is what Orono proved to be as they scored three more goals in the third period. Scoring for Orono was Bob- by Witheridge unassisted, Andrew Reid unassisted and Bobby Witheridge got his hat trick with a goal assisted by Jeremy Pare. Speaking of hats ours is off to Amy-Jane McAllister, Kevin Copp- ing, Alan Robb, Kyle Beacock, Clint Hawkshaw, Mike Morrison, net minder Ryan Schoep, goal scorers and assisters, good game gang.
