This Saturday at Liberty Bowt in Sheila Copps Woud reinstate VIA service Sheila Copps, one of six can- didates seeking the federal liberal leadership, speaking in Cobourg last, week said she would revitalîze VIA rail when she becomes prime minister. She was critical of the pre- sent government in closing out the service thus adding to the en- vironmental problems and the Calil for en vironmental study (Continued from page 1) The Advisory committee had held a public meeting in Newcastle Hall with comments from the public and council members and staff. The report isnow being cir- culated for comment prior to a final decision by the Ministry of the En- vironment. The report has gained great sup- port from locally interested people, as well as from the environmental group, "Save the Ganaraska Again." The Town of Newcastle planning deparmtent report also agreed with most of the recommendations of the Advisory committee and noted (bat in a number of cases the Region of Durham had already in- cluded recommendatons in the draft officiaI plan revision now underway. Kathy Guselle, chairman of SAGA in commenting to council on the Town's report said SAGA was pleased with the department report, having a concern that the Town suggested that it was unclear whether the Advisory committee greenhouse effect. Ms. Guselle said if it was unclear then such applications should be includ- ed in a moratorium. She said it would be inappropriate toQ delete these appliciains The Advisory committee did make 14 recommendations to the Minister of the Enviroment as a means to protect flot only the head- waters of the Ganaraska but in part in protection of the Oak Rîdges Moraine which runs aIl across the Region of Durham. ,The caIl for a study with financial assistance from the province bas been accepted by the Region and Town. It has also been agreed that the Miniistry become more involved in undertaking a moritorium with support, to the municipalities. The Town staff are to consider comments m ade by Ms. Guselle before a final report and sugges- tions are submitted to the Ministry. This week 1 am not in the best of moods! 1 am praying earnestly that it w il not be a fore runner for the remainder of this coming decade. But to get down to basics - having just got over the Christmas Holidays, which as usual cost me a "Few Bucks", followed rapidly by "New Years" (delete a few more "Green backs") when 1 ar- rive (as usual) right into Lynne's Birthday. (The "Pile" is getting smaller) Add to this a reminder from a couple of organiza- tions with whom 1- am af- filiated that my "Dues" should be paid, and then our "wonderful" govern- ment gets in on the act. 1 am next reminded that my drivers licence needs renewing ($30) followed a few days later that my licence plate renewal is due (suddenly this has jumnped to $90). I am now almost fit to be tied, but of course, as you have already surmised, it isn't over yet. It suddenly came as another shock to find that our passports are now out of date (there goes another $50) plus the cost, and inconvenience, of new' passport photos etc. I trust you are ail enjoying this breakdown 0of "incidentai" expenses, for 1 imagine you're ail going to face the same problems sooner or later, s0 take the smile off your faces! And s0 who Gan 1 blame for al this misery? Certainly not myseif, because I'm not aiways right, but, I'm seldom ever wrong!, However, I think I can answer my own question. As you al shouid know- and expect, we're probably heading into an election year - now doesn't that cheer you up? Our good friend and publisher wrote an excep- tionally good editorial recently on the subject of the so called "Meech Lake Accord" a document our current P.M. is attempting to foist on us, whether we like it or flot. Add this fact to a Finance Minister who is trying to tax us out of ex- istence (in an effort to br- ing down the expenses that he has burdened us with in the first place), and 1 think you must ail realize we have a. problem, one, in fact, that is almost border- ing on " Catastrophy." And so, to change the subject, - (if that is possi- ble) 1 imagine you willap- preciate a change of pace. Today, as 1 write this story, 1 had the pleasure of welcoming home from the hospital, my friend and neighbour Bill Bunting. You just can't keep a good man down. So once again, "Glad to see you back William," and' of course Mary, whoican now take over the task of being a ministering angel! And now in a 'lighter vein, we recently visited a car dealer to price a new vehicle (Jiyst browsing) but (Continued page 91 You can help build the future through nnpofit housing The Government of Canada, throughi Canada Mortgage and Housmng Corporation, and the Province of Ontario, through the Ministry of Housing, are making funding available to non-profit and co-operative organizations, churches, service clubs and other community groups interested in sponsoring affordable housing.
